Because of the overnight nature of this ride, and some long, hard days, this event is rated for "Advanced+" riders only. The longest days exceed 100 miles and will cover some challenging, high altitude terrain requiring advanced skill and preparation. See the Overnight Rides section for detailed description and suggested list of equipment.

I see light weight food often mentioned in that section you pointed me to.

How about some more input from the overnight experts on food issues.

I'm curious what foods they are they bringing for themselves.

Are we talking MRE's, or are there other ideas?

Thanks Brad

Brad,

I haven't been on the Marathon, too many other things to do during the Jam.  I have talked to quite a few of the riders though and looked at what they take.

It seems that you get just about everything.
Since its three days some guys will just load a cooler of your basic food.  Others bring MRE's.

Personally I like MRE's.  The food is really quite good.  If you haven't tried it lately it is amazingly better than you might imagine.  Price is not bad and you can't beat the convenience.

I like this website for MRE's, great selection and some decent combined packages. Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!!  You need to Login or Register!!

This site seems to have a good price on a 12 meal pack Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!!  You need to Login or Register!!

Lots of places.  Make sure they are MilSpec MRE's. There are a bunch of companies selling "MRE's" that are not MilSpec and while they might be okay I wouldn't trust a non-milspec MRE to last a year.  BTW, MilSpec is a specification, not a brand name even thought there is a "MISPEC" brand MRE.  Confusing huh.  Most place are sold out of MRE's, they all wne to IRAQ.

I think I'd be too busy riding and talking to want to spend much time messing with cooking anything on that ride so the MRE makes a lot of sense.

Thanks ATVDude,

Yes I'm familiar with the modern MRE's and I agree they are quite tasty. I have some links to other MRE suppliers on my website here:

I'll check out the links you gave me here too, I appreciate it! I have yet to go overnight on my machine, so I'm glad to hear that MRE's are being used by the experienced ATV campers. I think I will be doing the same when I start overnight camping this year. Thanks Again!  Brad

Brad and others,  Last year was y first Marathon ride and it was great.  I am signed up for this year also and have this suggestion for the food issue.  From what I saw, most brought way too much food.  Each day you end up in one of the small towns for lunch and to fill up with gas and water and what ever else you need.  So all you need is food for three nights and three breakfasts.  You could buy your evening meal each day while at lunch. There is a camp fire each night so you can cook hot dogs or what ever at the camp fire.  At the camp site several different groups will also build a small fire to cook on or just sit around and BS.  So you don't even need to bring a gas or propane cook stove.  Some brought small tent heaters because last year on the first night it froze.  And this year is a week later than last year, so it could be cold at night. What I found is that bringing plenty of pop and water and hot chocolate mix was more important than a bunch of food that you bring back.  We stop every hour or so for everyone to catch up so snacks or candy bars were a nice treat.  For me the main big meal of the day was lunch in one of the small towns.  John

NO.  Sorry but as it says in the ride description in bold red type. Trailers will not be allowed on this ride. They have had to may problems with trailers in the past holding up the group and breaking down.

#1 - Mountain Man Marathon (Richfield) - SPONSORED BY MONTANA JACKS
No matter what you're thinking, the Mountain Man Marathon is not for coon skin caps and black powder rifles. What is it, you ask? It is an exciting 'marathon' (endurance run) planned for mountain men (and women), on ATV's. During this 3-1/2 day 3 night adventure we will ride approximately 300 or more miles on the Paiute ATV Trail and portions of the Great Western Trail, camping alongside the trail. This has been one of the most popular events for several years, with the route changing each year to provide new trails and new scenery for those who may have been along before. This ride will challenge your endurance and provide the ultimate ATV adventure for those who feel they can accept the challenge. The trails will be rocky, steep, and narrow. You should be prepared for all kinds of weather and your ATV should be jetted for high altitudes. Trailers will not be allowed on this ride. This ride is rated for " Advanced "  riders only !!
