RIDE FOR LIFE POKER RUN PLANS WELL UNDERWAY
Members of the combined groups organizing the third annual Ride for Life Poker Run met in the Commission Chambers at the Court House on Thursday, Juue 30, for a meeting to make sure everything is underway for this event that has not only brought hundreds of people to the Fillmore area, but has also earned thousands of dollars for the Huntsman Cancer Research Center.
Assignments were discussed with the Lions Club in charge of registrations, the Committee of Hope in charge of the dinner and the Sand Rock RidgeRiders in charge of the poker run itself. Each organization reported that plans were well underway and their assignments would be completed on schedule.
The Ride for Life Poker Run will be held on Saturday, August 6 with registration at the North Park in Fillmore from 8 to 10 a.m., where the riders will receive their cards and first poker punch. Riders will follow the signs from that point around the Fillmore Loop, making their second poker punch stop at the White Pine Junction. From there the riders will continue north across the tops of the ridges on the Paiute ATV Trail to the Chalk Creek Junction. There they will make a left hand turn toward the west and continue on to the Bear Hollow Corral for their third poker punch. If someone forgets to make the left turn, they will soon run into a sign that tells them they are headed the wrong direction. After Bear Hollow Corral, the trails begins its descent down the switchbacks into Chalk Creek Canyon and the next poker punch at Pistol Rock Campground. At this point the trail follows the canyon road, hanging to the right to go on to Copley’s Cove instead of exiting the canyon at the “Y”. The upper route here is closed to ATV travel. Passing Copley’s Cove, the trail squeezes between two boulders and enters a narrow section of the canyon where the trail makes several stream crossings. This is a favorite spot of riders on a hot summer day. After coming out of the narrow section of canyon, the trail follows the old road down the canyon and up a hill to join the paved road east of town. Following the signs back to the National Guard Armory and the last poker punch is easy from here. A delicious lunch will be served prior to the awarding of the poker prizes. A great number of businesses have already donated generously and more are expected.
Organizers are excited about the interest being shown this year. Last year at this point in time there were 54 registered riders. This year there are already 124 with the number going up every day. This says a lot about the way this event has been run in the past, about people’s interest in visiting the great scenery our area has to offer, and about people’s generosity when it comes to supporting a great cause.
