ELSINORE - A Sunday four-wheeler ride took a devastating turn for an Elsinore youth Oct. 2 when the ATV he was driving flipped over and crushed him.

Kaden Jacobson, 12, was driving up a hill near Monroe when his ATV fell backwards on him. Jacobson was wearing a bicycle helmet, but still sustained head injuries according to the accident report filed by the Sevier County Sheriff's Office.

Jacobson was transported to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City, where he has undergone a number of surgeries and still has at least one more surgery to go, said Kip Wilson, Jacobson's grandfather.

So far, the Jacobsons' medical bills have totaled some $700,000. With no insurance, his family is looking for ways to pay the mounting medical costs. Jacobson is a son of Jason and Sheli Jacobson, Elsinore.

A medical bills help fund for the Jacobsons has been set up at:

Wells Fargo Bank, Richfield Office
125 W 1300 S, Richfield, UT
(435) 896-8427

Anyone who wants to donate can do so by visiting or calling the Wells Fargo office and asking about the Kaden Jacobson Fund.

It breaks my heart every time I see something like this.  It is also dangerous to the continuation of our sport.  Nothing will close a riding area faster than an accident.  These kinds of accidents do more damage than ten Green Lawsuits.  Let's be pro active and contribute to this family and let's try to be better teachers of our children in riding ATVs. PLEASE everyone buy a Quality DOT or SNELL approved helmet for your kids and make them wear it!  A bicycle helmet is useless when it comes to ATV accidents.

Could this accident have happened on the 65 trail?

I had the occasion to come upon an ATV accident scene in Arkansas one time.  A twelve year boy was entering a no ATV area by going up a twenty foot tall embankment.  He almost made it, then right at the top the ATV flipped over on top of him.  He bled to death internally before we could get the medivac helicoptor to him.  I've often wondered if I had gone for help, would the help have arrived faster?  And was my decision to stay with the young man being the only medical professional present the right thing to do.

But you know what, doing illegal things with ATVs will not only get you in trouble, but can kill or permanently injure you.  Unfortunately it is the individual's decision to break the law, or in the above case, ride above one's ablility with inadequate safety equipment.  Although my guess is that no amount of safety gear protects one from being crushed by a 500 pound ATV.

I'd be interested to know what size ATV was involved in this accident.  My bet...one that clearly states that it is only for riders 16 and up.

We'll try to get a collection together here and contact Wells Fargo.
