SPAM postings - ugh
06/06/06 at 10:33:50

It seems the SPAM people think they can come in here and polute our forums.  :'(

We are trying to figure out how to stop this and have deleted several.
If you see something that is clearly a spam post we will likely catch it and delete it.

However if you see one that has been on the boards for a few days please let me or the Forum Admin know via a PM and we Smiley will send it to the bit bucket ASAP.

I saw that one the other day. A slight deturant might be the ability to post only after becoming a member? I know you can post as a guest which that spam post was.

I am a mod on another site and occasionally we have spammers there too and that site only allows posting after registering. After post deletion the account gets banned from further posting.

I read all the posts and keep a log of the IP addresses that post spam. I've banned most of Russia and parts of South America because of the spam.  For now I'll keep deleting them and banning repeat offenders IP addresses. I've tried to avoid the "forced to register" thing. Some times a guy just wants to ask a simple question and wont bother if he has to register. If it keeps up I may be forced to turn on "no posting by guests".

I've had more problems from the GREEN team than anyone. You know who I mean... their name starts with an "S".
I used to see a lot of inflammatory anti-ATV comments show up around midnight to 1 am, but they seem to have stopped after I started banning IP addresses.
Several company and school networks as well as certain DSL lines in Salt Lake City are now IP address banned totally from the server. I hate to ban anyone but I have to protect my viewers from abuse.

It's a shame we can't flood them with SPAM so they can enjoy their own trash as well as others. I do that with junk mail. They provide free postage to reply so I collect the days crap and switch it around and mail it out in those free postage envelopes. This way they get to pay to see other's junk mail. If we could just do that to the spammers then maybe they would back off!
