Badger Creek Loop - Paunsaugunt Plateau
01/08/07 at 11:54:42

Paunsaugunt Plateau - Powell Ranger District

Badger Creek Loop starts at the Tropic Reservoir Trail head and continues past the Chimney Rock hoodoos, looping through mixed conifer forests to reach a view overlooking the community of Hatch.  There is a section of this loop identified on the map where only ATVs are allowed.  This short ATV Only section is on the eastern leg going south from Ingram Hollow to the Gauging Station. (see larger map for details) Viewing areas along this loop offer a birds-eye view of brilliantly colored cliffs and hoodoos. This an approximate 30 mile loop takes 2.5 hours, without stops, to complete.

Elevation ranges from 7747 feet to 9331 feet.

Thanks Gary, since you and I have the same GPS I can use your Garmin file and download it into mine and have you as my guide, even when you can't make it!! Thanks so much for all of this!

It is the photos from the Big Ride as well as the actual GPS tracks in both National Geo and Garmin formats Smiley
there is a map of the area here:  Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!!  You need to Login or Register!!

I will be posting new trails from the Paunsagunt a few at a time as I get them sorted out and written up. Probably one or two a day for a while. Smiley

Great stuff, FA!

Here is another perk related to the Badger Creek Loop. This is a short video (14 MB) of a neat side trail you can find near the top of Badger Creek, right around the "ET" in the word "SUNSET" in FA's map above.

You may have seen the beginning of this clip in my Lost on the Paunsaugunt video. But you didn't see or hear what happened right after I said "I'm scared to back down!" in the original video. So like Paul Harvey says, here is the rest of the story.  Grin

This one is PG because the ladies from Dance Hall Crashers (accompanying music) say a bad word near the end. That was cut from the original video as well.

P.S. - The original Lost on the Paunsaugunt video is here:

You should have got a picture from the side so you could see where the guy is standing, there's no support under him.  This is why this place is one of my favorites.

Oops, I think if we'd have known there was no support under him, he wouldn't have been standing there!  Shocked

Yeah, the end of that outcropping has about four feet on the end that is unsupported.  Several years ago we took one of our new members there and took a picture of him on the edge and guess what...his wife won't let him come out and play with us anymore...boo hooo hoooo.

Of course he was pretty shocked when he was riding away from it across the valley and saw where he had been standing.

Can't understand why you didn't drive out to the end? Love the GPS coordinates, I put them into Google Earth and will keep a log of them. That is some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Keep up the good work you lucky dogs.
