Utah ATV Trail Map for Garmin GPS
03/12/07 at 19:22:45

Map was created from data on the recently released Utah Off-Highway Vehicle Maps 2007 CD.

If you have an earlier version of my Utah maps go to the Control Panel, select Add or Remove Programs and delete them.

This TYP modified map will install into Mapsource where you can select them from the drop-down list for upload to your Garmin color GPS. The map has a transparent background so you basemap or detailed maps will show through. If you have US Topo or any other Garmin detailed maps you can upload them right along with the trail maps. The following trail map was uploaded with US Topo as a background map to a 276c for illustration. With colored trails it is much easier to distinguish them from highways, roads and streets. Note: This TYP custom map will display the altered trail colors in late model Garmins....if your unit is not compatible the trails will display in the default color red.

click to download...open zip file...read READ_ME_FIRST file for installation instructions

Now this is cool  Cool and I don't want to come across as being in anyway negative about it, But I think we need to help the State guys slim this down and clean up all the duplicated tracks in the Topo file. Some how when the Topo file was made it ended up with most of the tracks being duplicated or in some cases even more. It looks ok when zoomed out, but when you zoom in, all the multiple tracks can become a clutter on the GPS screen. I love this custom map. It's just a bit confusing in some areas with all duplicated lines. I can see it confusing people with little or no GPS knowledge or knowledge of the area they are trying to explore.

I contacted National Geographic to see if they have a tool to clean up duplications or some how merge tracks along a common route. they said they do not at the moment but are working on one.  In the mean time I am working on manually cleaning up the duplicated tracks in the Topo file.

My hats off to Dale and Bill and Fred for an awesome job with getting all these trails inventoried Smiley Thanks Guys.

I went and stripped out all the duplicates I could find (could still be an odd one here and there...if you find some let me know and I'll take them out.).  Go to Control Panel -  Add or Remove Programs to delete my previous Utah ATV Trail Maps and install a new set.  The link in my original post has an updated map.

What I created is a map...a simple map of just trails...maps can only be viewed one at a time in Mapsource....they cannot overlay each other.  My Utah trail map has a transparent background so when you upload it to your GPSr it will allow your basemap or any other Garmin detailed map to show through.  If you want to see the track data loaded over US Topo in Mapsource you would have to convert the .tpo file found on the Utah Off-Highway Vehicle Maps CD to either .gdb or .gpx track file and then open it in Mapsource.

Here is the track files loaded in Mapsource

lang this map is one you upload onto a Garmin GPS and yes you need mapsource to use it. It's actualy not much use in Mapsource on the PC. It's intended to be an overlay in the GPS display. Smiley Pretty cool too I might add.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I'm headed to Utah for 9 days in June and would love to be able to load these into my Garmin GPSMap 60CS. I have Mapsource Topo, NG Topo (for UT) and the Utah map CD's. I cannot find a single TPO file to convert on the CD's. I prefer Mapsource so these other files don't seem to help without the TPO file apparently. I've been using Mapsource for years and this is getting pretty frustrating. Thanks.

The tpo file I used to make the map is in the root directory of the Utah Off-Highway Vehicle Maps CD.

Thanks for the quick replay. Do you mean the one named "National Geographic Topo" at 1,525 KB? I was looking for smaller individual files.

That is the file Pat. The State CD has all the trail in one combined file.

Yes...

Once you convert it to Garmin's .gdb there will be a multitude of individual track files.  In Mapsource pick and choose the track files for the area you are gonna ride.  I found that the track files are also quite segmented...you may want to use the track editing tools in Mapsource to join the segmented sections together.  By doing so you will get a lot more trails loaded into Garmin's 20 track limit.  BTW that is why I made a map from the files...to get around this ridiculous low track limit...I can install the map into Mapsource, then upload the map to my Garmin unit and have all the trails from the CD loaded at once.  To make you own maps from GPS tracks see my other post "Make Custom Maps for Garmin".

My Utah ATV trail map has been modified.  The link in the original post above will get you the new version.  If you have an older version installed go to Control Panel...Add or Remove Programs and delete "Utah ATV Trails"...then install this new version.

I changed the level/bit settings...trails should display better at zoomed in levels....and I also increased the trail line width.  No new trail data was added.

I tried downloading the transparencies..........and it wiped out my Mapsource.  Can't find it anywhere on the computer.  It keeps telling me to reload mapsource........ At this point I can't even tell you where I got it.  I don't have a CD...... Anyhow, food for thought.   Thanks........... Doug

Your Mapsource is still there but won't open because of a conflict of maps.  The installation program for my map creates a directory and places some files in it under the C:\Programs Files folder and makes an entry in the Registry so Mapsource knows where to find the trail map....that's it...does nothing with any Garmin or Mapsource directory or files..

To solve this do the following.

What other maps did you have installed before you installed the Utah trail maps?  To see a list of all maps installed in Mapsource download a copy of MapSetToolKit from this site...run the program and look in the window called Uninstall Mapset.  Give me a list of all the maps you see there including the FID number for each.

Auggie the Disk from the State has not changed that I know of. It contained Topo data for use with National Geographic Topo software.

The map offered for download here is a Garmin specific map overlay which sits on top of the existing maps in the Garmin GPS. It's purpose is to highlight and add trails that do not show up on the maps in the GPS normally.

What program did you use to convert .tpo over to .gdb?

GPSBabel

Explaine?

GPSBabel converts waypoints, tracks, and routes between many popular GPS receivers and mapping programs. Such as converting National Geographic Topo files (.tpo) to Garmin Mapsource files (.gdb) ot to Magellan Mapsend files.

It also has powerful manipulation tools for such data.

It does not convert, transfer, send, or manipulate maps. It process GPS data that may (or may not be) placed on a map, such as waypoints, tracks, and routes.

This is what is happening to me:  I have the Utah Trail Map installed in Mapsource, but when I transfer it to my garmin I lose all the detail of my topo map.  I would guess all I am seeing are the trails on top of the base map, instead of the trails ontop of the topo map.

Am I doing something wrong?  The installation went fine, and I can see the trail maps in Mapsource.

Thanks for any help.

You need to upload the trail map and your Topo map all in one shot.

I want to also thank you for creating this. It is a great source and tool for me when I'm out riding. It helps me to know that I am on a legal trail in Utah. Thanks so much for taking time to create this.

Now, I don't want to be greedy looking here but, do you have any plans to update this with the data added to the new 08 Version of the CD?

Is there still a way to get the Utah CD from the FS?

Also if I have mapsource is it possible to bring the transparancies into the topo maps? When I click on the Utah ATV Trails maps I only see the red tracks and Id like to be able to overlay these on the topos on my computer.

Thanks. I'm trying to piece together a Great Western Trail ride for the summer between Tropic and Torrey and I can't seemt o find detailed maps or ifo on this section.

After a couple of days of foiled attempts and then the help of a computer guru friend. I was able to make the down load and install this overlay to my Garmin 276c. Looks like it is going to be a great asset. Can't wait to get back on the trail and try it out....

Thanks to all that put the effort into making this happen.. Dennis

Not sure if I'm on the right category/thread, but I can't find a listing for the Nat.Geo topo maps on the links page.  Only nine listings, but no Utah.  How can I order one?

I am a new member - today I tried to load your GPS maps into my Mapsourse and it includes "Utah ATV Trails" in the drtop down --but when I click on it  (in the drop down box).  all I get is 4 blank boxes.  Do you have an idea as to what I am doing wrong?

Anysuggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thats about all you see in Mapsource. You might see a few red squigly lines but no other Topo detail. This is simply an overlay for the Topo map adding a highlighting to the OHV trails. It is all combined as a set with the other map details when uploaded to the GPS.

Remember to select all 4 boxes and add them to the map set. They should turn pink.

Then go to the drop down and select the Topo US version you have and then select the areas you want and add them to the map set. If you have added the Paiute and or Arapeen do the same with them.

Now on the "maps" tab you should see all the sections you selected and added to the map set.

Then upload it all to the GPS. It will take a while because Mapsource has to compile it all into one mig detailed map file to load on the GPS. When it's done remember to power off your GPS and then turn it back on.

Now use the pan mode on the GPS and pan to an area of the State were there are trails, such as the paiute or Arapeen or Moab areas and you will see the Utah OHV trails highlighted as a white line with red borders. The Paiute and Arapeen trails are color coded to match the maps.

Thanks --I saw the red lines.  And got them transfered to the GPS devise.  At least it said it did.  Dont know for sure.

Next question-I have a Garmin nuvi 1300 and it doesnt have a pan mode.  Do you know of another way to view how the trails are going to appear on the unit with out being there?

I dont think you can on a nuvi. Im not sure you would want to take a nuvi out in the elements they are not water proof or dust proof.
