Forum Member Registration Complaints
11/07/08 at 10:55:08

I have been receiving emails complaining people cant get an account activation email or that the email is missing the required link to activate the new Forum Member account.

The emails are being sent, they are sent with the required information.

HOWEVER it seems a lot of email SPAM filters are either not allowing the emails to pass through or are stripping out the required link. Some email systems are deliberately breaking the link in the email, I assume as a sort of safety measure. If the link is on two lines try to copy the entire text of the link to the web browser address bar without any blank spaces in it then click the goto button and it should work.

I cant fix your email SPAM filters nor will I try. If you wish to register a member account then be sure you add Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!!  You need to Login or Register!!
and Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!!  You need to Login or Register!!
to your protected email list, or add it to your address book, which ever makes it so the emails will not be filtered or modified.

I have replied to multiple emails lately about this and in each case even my reply emails have been returned as rejected by SPAM filters. Some have sent back an email requiring me to jump through hoops, clicking links or registering to create some sort of account so your email filters will allow me to reply to your email. I wont do this, I don't have the time. If you write to me be sure you will be able to get my reply.

I'll also say the foul language and abusive emails I have received lately from a few individuals because they feel they are being ignored or refused a member account are really unnecessary and make me honestly think twice about allowing those people to join our fantastic family of Forum members. Their email system is screwing up the activation emails not me or the ATVUtah Forums.

Gary,

I've never had the chance to meet you (yet) but even as a newbie to this forum I have appreciated and been impressed by how you run it.

Seriously people, haven't we had enough with the inflammatory, derogatory rhetoric from the elections of late? If you're so into immediate gratification or easily offended that you can't iron out something as simple as a login name on this kind of forum without getting verbally abusive to its chief operator, there are anger management classes you should be attending. Take a break and do some pushups or something.

The link you're sending in the e-mail will not open within some web email accounts such as yahoo and requires that you copy the link in another page/tab before the registration will complete itself.  Even with the pop-up blocker settings turned off and the site added to the security settings of your browser you still have to copy the link within the email.  I have tried it with IE7, Firefox, and Safari.  Each time I recieve the same error (just a blank screen when clicking on the link).  That is until I copied it within a new tab.  I'm not sure of how you could fix this or even if you can fix it or if it's just a problem with Yahoo and Gmail.

soap box  ... Now I'll step down from this...

It is a problem with Yahoo, MSN and a few others and the way they handle links in emails as an attempt to protect their users from malicious emails. What I send out is nothing more than a simple web page link to a page here on the forums with a login confirmation number in it and nothing else. I can NOT fix Yahoo, I can NOT fix MSN or Gmail, or Comcast or any one else's email system. Anyone who ever used AOL is used to this problem with links in emails. Some email systems are actually deliberately breaking the link in the email, I assume as a sort of safety measure.

Until those system will allow links from within emails to open properly you will need to copy the link to a new window or tab and then click the GO button or hit enter.

The simple fact that when the link is copied and pasted into a web browser address box and it worked proves there is nothing wrong with the registration confirmation link being emailed to new members.

Before I implemented this live link back confirmation step we had over 2500 SPAM bots a week registering on the forums and posting their porn and garbage. Since it's implementation as well as a few hours a day on my part in filtering out the IP addresses of hacker attacks and other attempts to compromise the forums we have had little or no spam and none from automated bots.

It's sad when we have to make life difficult for decent people just to keep the filth and thieves at bey.

I agree with everything you have said. It just took us a while to figure out what we were doing wrong with the conformation link. Now that we're on, everything is good. I too am impressed with the way you do the forum. Maybe someday I too will be able to meet you

Gary,
It is hard to not be discouraged when people lower themselves to insult without taking time to fix "their" problems. I am sure I speak for so many in saying your efforts are appreciated!
My friend Dann & I first met you in 2005 and have come to appreciate the commitment you and your family have made to this activity we love so much.
I have told myself many times "I need to financially support the ATVUtah forum", so today after I send this I will follow through.
Know this, people by nature will complain before they compliment.
I want to Thank You & your family for doing all you do to keep this forum going and keeping us informed.
