Ghost Rider

Everyone,
We (Ride with Respect) finally had our chance to spend a day with Governor Huntsman on our dirtbikes, talking about proper OHV management thru well designed and constructed trail systems.
Below is an account of the trip by Dave Cozzens (RwR).

Hi everybody,
I have something exciting to report. Some (hopefully all) of you remember an email I sent out on October 2, 2008 about Governor Huntsman and a statement he was reported to have made about off road use. I was upset that he would give time to SUWA representatives and not his own supporters and natuaral allies.
After a campaign of emails and phone calls to the Huntsman and Herbert offices, I received a call from Lt. Governor Gary Herbert. He assured me that Governor Huntsman supported access to public lands and that the story in the SL Tribune did not reflect his attitude or actions accurately. Two weeks later I recieved a call from the Governor's office requesting an official visit to Moab and a field trip with Ride with Respect as hosts to Governor Huntsman.
Several dates were set and postponed for various reasons. It seemed at times that the ride would not happen, but we persisted in our efforts to bring it about. Governor Huntsman's staff continued to work toward the ride and held a meeting for Dale Parriott and I in the interim in which we were able to discuss concerns about land management in Grand County.
After six months the long awaited ride happened today. Governor Huntsman, two of his staff, and five security personnel rode with us for about four hours and genuinely listened to our concerns. I believe that is the first time I have seen such an event. To argue in a meeting around a desk about problems and solutions is very unproductive. When out on the ground looking at a problem area, solutions are much more obvious. But government people will absolutely refuse to visit a site in most cases.
I have to thank all of you who pressured to make this happen. I have wanted to tell everybody about this day, but with all the postponements and time lapse, that would have been a mistake. Also, I was certain that if this trip became common knowledge it would fail.
Maybe now those of you who helped make this event possible could help in thanking Governor Huntsman for his outstanding effort. Much needs to be done, but I believe that Governor Huntsman is committed to do all he can in this cause. I will continue to contact his office to work out details that should improve the access situation over the next years. I am confident that state agencies will help us generate a viable travel plan and expand opportunities. Hopefully the BLM can be encouraged to follow suit.
A report will appear on At Your Leisure Sunday morning at 9:00 AM on channel 4. I was very impressed also with Chad Booth and crew as they documented our ride and interviewed Governor Huntsman. Watch it and see what you think. This topic is of vital importance to anyone who visits public land for recreation, or for any reason. We really need to take back our land from "managers" who consider anything beyond hiking as destruction of resources. Our existence depends on it.
