Paria Closure - Salt Lake Trib

Workin graves, lo and behold I come across a bit of news coverage about this weekend's protest ride.  I love the 'Road Warriors' headline.  Begs the question, who gets the role of Mad Max?   Huh

This was my reply

Quote:
I always find it interesting reading the comment following an article like this. One who's author has quite apparently not researched the facts and therefore makes several statements that are in fact wrong. One whose author apparently is not concerned with real and impartial journalism and reporting but in fact uses her job to make false claims and prints one sided articles to push her own personal feelings and agenda. Should the author actually research the facts she would have discovered this is the path of a historic transportation corridor dating back to the 1800. Access rights to it have been a point of dispute between the BLM and Kane County well since before the designation of the Grand Staircase National Monument. The author of the article failed to point out that U. S. Congress granted Kane County highway rights across these federally managed lands during the repeal of the RS2477 rule. What many of you fail to understand is that this protest is about protecting ALL of your rights from a government bureaucracy who is over stepping their boundaries and mandate to manage our public lands for everyone; not just for an elite few who feel like they have exclusive rights to Utah’s scenic back country and public lands.

On a final note; I also love reading how those people making anti OHV use comments always revert to third grade name calling and verbal bashing of those who support OHV use on our public lands existing trails and routes rather than making it a civilized debate of the issues. Could it be they can't find an actual valid argument to use so name calling is their only means of expressing themselves? What they always seem to want to avoid is these debates is these are not new routes. Many such as the Paria route have been in existence for hundreds of years. Now I have said my piece let the name calling begin, I got over that kind of thing in the kindergarten, too bad many out there reading this never grew up past that point in their life.

I too have been astounded at the HATE that is spewed forth out of the anti crowd on this article. The post above is dead on. there are no facts, no counter arguments, just pure hate. Then they throw in the Mormon church, what does religion have to do with this issue? It was never mentioned and has no opinion on the matter. They then throw in gun ownership as part of it, where did that come in to play? the comment I liked the best from a pro ATV person was their comment that it sounds like these folks would love to put all ATV riders and Mormons in a concentration camp. I think that summed up my thoughts on them very well!

This crowd does not allow any other thoughts or opinions that differ from their own. Everyone will come to believe as they believe or they are not fit to live on the face of this earth. These folks scare the heck out of me!!!!

We need to get passionate about this issue and wake the sleeping giant to make a mighty roar that the world can hear and understand!

I hope this type of article will be a wakeup call to everyone so they will realize what is at stake and who we are fighting against in this battle.

I am proud to say that my son wrote a very nice letter to the editor of the SLC trip. I think it is factual and objective. I am posting it here as I think it is pretty darn great.

Dear editor,
This letter is in response to an article entitled “Road warriors to roar vs. BLM ban” by Patty Henetz. First off, I am shocked and appalled that your paper would run this story in its final form. This article is blatantly biased against all OHV users. The first sentence of “hundreds of anti-government rebels in jeeps and all-terrain vehicles plan to take a protest ride Saturday up an off-limits riverbed in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.” lets the reader know that Ms. Henetz is extremely anti-OHV. I ask you, whatever happened to using the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics? One part of the code I am referring to reads: “Support the open exchange of views, even views they find repugnant.” It is obvious that this did not happen since the opening sentence can be viewed as libel and attacks those who plan to protest.  Another area in which Ms. Henetz failed to follow the code of ethics reads: “Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by news coverage.”  Again, this idea was tossed to the side in the opening sentence. Again, another area in which she failed reads: “Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.” Ms. Henetz is obviously against anything OHV.
I now ask you; if your staff can not follow their own professional code of ethics in their writing and slant this story to meet their own personal agenda, how can your readers trust the other articles that have been printed? When your reporters fail to cover both sides of an issue, especially when the issue is known by those who are affected, how can your reporters hold their credibility?  Ms. Henetz also showed a true lack of professional journalism by failing to mention the true heart of the matter. The real reason for the protest of the Paria trail is the illegal closure of the road by the BLM. The closure is illegal based on R.S. 2477, which states that “in Utah, applicable State code provided for the acceptance of a right-of-way pursuant to R.S. 2477 across public lands not reserved for public purposes when a right-of-way had been used by the public for a continuous 10 year period. “ The Paria river bed has been used by the public as a roadway since the 1800s. The BLM failed to acknowledge Kane county’s ownership of this thoroughfare and closed this trail illegally. That is the reason for the protest ride on Saturday. The BLM continually chooses to ignore this piece of legislation and if those who are affected by their illegal action do not stand up to this, they will continue to do so. We are not protesting the closure of the surrounding areas, just the illegal closure of the road/riverbed.

I read the article here:

Are we reading the same article?  I didn't read one occurance of "mormon" and didn't see the name calling alluded to.

That said, the article was biased but not the extent I thought I'd see after reading the remarks above.

But I'm all for supporting our cause.  I wish I could be with you all on Saturday but have prior commitments that I couldn't get out of.  I was going to try to ride down with QuadForce late Friday but I can't get away till 10 PM or later.

I've signed the electronic petition and have a couple paper copies going around as well.

You guys go 'give 'em hell'!!  I'm with you.

Everytime I read comments in the Tribune it's always the same . Very , very few facts  and  no one can state  their feelings without uncalled for name calling  and ignorance .

Not one person stated the truth , that the Paria has been inventoried  as a road for 110 years . Anyone who has spent time in that canyon  can tell you  that the water that comes through there washes  out the canyon every year .

I got to page three and I had  to stop . I actually think that  the idea is to beat you down with name calling untill you give up . Well , I'm sick of the name  calling but I refuse to give up .

Sorry if this is duplicated, but this was in today's Tribune:

---
A Kanab businesswoman is organizing a "picnic with a purpose" alongside the Paria River as a peaceful way to speak out against hundreds of off-roaders who plan to take a protest ride Saturday in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

But Susan Hand insists her event won't be a counterprotest. She hopes her allies won't try to stop the four-wheelers as they tool up the river in defiance of an expected Bureau of Land Management announcement that it will begin enforcing rules against riding in the Paria streambed.

"We want to show the world that local people care about protecting our land from illegal and irresponsible use. We will not be confrontational, inflammatory, aggressive or hostile," Hand said in an e-mail she sent to others who favor protecting the Paria. "It's hard to yell at someone who is calmly sitting in a lawn chair, munching a muffin and sipping tea."

Hand hopes the picnic will proceed without any fuss from the riders. "I'd like to invite them to have coffee."

But others are ready to mount opposing protests. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance issued a call to action against "renegade off-road-vehicle riders."

"The canyon is a wilderness study area and has been closed to ORV use for years by the Utah [office of the] Bureau of Land Management," SUWA said, "but the protest organizers believe this beautiful canyon, along with every other piece of public land in Utah, should be open to ORVs."
this week in Kanab's Southern Utah News headlined "Road Closing Protest" called for people to gather at the mouth of Johnson Canyon in Kanab for a ride up Paria Canyon. "'We the people' must stop the federal government from closing down all our roads and doubling the size of the monument."

It's rumored that Kane County Commissioner Mark Habbeshaw placed the unsigned ad. Habbeshaw hasn't responded to multiple requests for comment. But he has a history of opposing federal attempts to keep Jeeps and all-terrain vehicles on designated trails and out of wilderness-quality areas.

Kanab resident and off-road rally organizer Shawna Cox expects 500 to 1,000 riders to show up for the Paria protest. She doesn't expect any trouble.

"Nobody I know is going to be causing any problem," she said, adding she has arranged for county law enforcement to be there "to see that things don't get out of hand."

Picnic organizer Hand said that's what she and others fear.

"There are a lot of people I know who are environmentalists in this area. But I don't know how many people will show up. It's kind of intimidating for people," she said. "They are afraid of repercussions in the community. Because you are a minority, you open yourself up to consequences."

Frustration over the monument's management, particularly concerning county claims on roads that cross public land, has been constant since 1996, when President Bill Clinton designated 1.8 million acres in Kane County for the special status.

This weekend's ride comes in the wake of a federal appeals court ruling that said the 2000 monument management plan has the force of law. That plan does not recognize the Paria corridor as a route for motorized-vehicle access.

Habbeshaw -- who on Thursday was circulating a photo of a BLM sign that says, "Streambed of Paria River Open to Motor Vehicles" -- and others maintain the Paria has long been a road.

Salt Lake City resident Todd Adams said he took the picture in June 1999. He stayed in an RV park whose owners commuted to St. George on the route every week to visit a sick relative.

"I got an appreciation of how important this and other non-paved routes are to the rural communities," he wrote in an e-mail. "There is a reason the locals are upset and going forward with this protest led by Mark [Habbeshaw]."

At first I was pissed off like everyone else here on these forums.  I contacted Tom Wharton, the outdoors writer for the Tribune, and told him what I thought of the story.  We exchanged several coridial but VERY FRANK e-mails about the subject.  I also wrote a letter to the editor expressing my displeasure with the inaccuracies and the tone of the article.   But in thinking further on the topic and seeing its effect on the readers of this forum, it may just be the "slap up the side of the head" kind of thing that wakes up the broader ATV community and really gets the ATVers lurkering on the sidelines to get involved.  Just my opinion. Here is the link to the article with the picture of the BLM sign on the Paria that Bruteforce refers to.  It was emailed to me by a friend in Kanab.
