ATV accidents on the rise???
05/18/09 at 08:05:56

I know, this is a soap box for me! soap box

Are we doing everything we can as a forum to promote ATV safety?  We need to or some do-gooders will do it for us and more laws will flood us.

In the last few weeks there have been a number of deaths and injuries associated with ATV/SxS accidents, and I know of two more that I responded on with SAR that did not make the news.  We see this in the spring every year with the new riders, but it seems more this year.  There is always the bunch that lubricate the wheels too much with beer and we have responded on a couple of those already this year.

I would like everyone to help with this if they have not already been doing it (most of us do all ready).  I talk to kids that I see riding on the streets and sometimes adults, or if they are driving too fast for the conditions, and especially if they are not wearing helmets.  I go out of my way to prase kids who are wearing helmets.   In most cases those who are driving on the streets/or without helmets see others doing it and profess that they did not know the laws.  It only takes a few minutes to talk to them or their parents and express concern for their safety.

Even some of those that I have riden with for years who have not riden ATV's with helmets are starting to do so.

Working in dispatch, I know what you mean about how many crashes don't make the news.  While I haven't noticed much increase at work as far as ATV complaints taken over previous years (we get a lot, all spring/summer/fall, every year), it does seem like the deaths from crashes (and the widespread news coverage of these) is up.  And one prominent line in most of the news reports is, "The rider was not wearing a helmet."

SAR, I think you have it.  Vigorously promoting responsible riding and helmet use for all age-groups will do more to stem this tide than just about anything, and will be the quickest way to end the many "out-of-control ATV" complaints that are made to law enforcement, which tend to highlight the infamous 'few bad apples' among us.

I'm at the consolidated dispatch center in Cedar City.  We dispatch pretty much everyone in the surrounding area, local agencies, UHP, DWR, Fire and EMS for Iron County.

Please, let's all promote safety where ever possible.

I have responded on many ATV accidents while serving on the ambulance and with SAR.  I have only responded to one accident where the victim who visited the forum so it would appear that most of our riders are pretty safe.  Most are adult injuries like the one in the photo but we also get quite a few kids.  Please make sure they are wearing a helmet that fits and driving a machine sized for them.  Those two issues, if done properly, would make a huge difference.

Here is a composite photo from the ATV accident we responded to last week in Spanish Fork Canyon.  One of the victims was flown out on Life Flight and the second is being brought out in his own SxS.  He was driving it out with that busted up arm (pretty tough guy) when we met him on the trail.  A deputy is driving it out in the photo and if you look close you can tell that the victim has a shoulder/elbow injury because of the sling and splint.

All we can do is promote safety and be a good example.

Hey, I think I recognize that guy on the red AC TRV!  Thanks are due to all of you guys who volunteer your time to provide these badly needed services.  Those of us who enjoy the out of doors here in Utah are very fortunate to have the well prepared SAR groups throughout the state who are covering our backsides if needed.

Thanks!  How else can I have fun!  Gotta have the toys!  And, what a great excuse to go enjoy the Utah backcountry.  It is a neat thing to be able to do.  All the hours of training, the expensive "toys", the long hours are all a wash if you make a difference in the life of another person.

Our SAR group is like this forum bunch...good people and all of them would do anything for you.

Those are deputies...they don't have anything they need to protect! Rolling on floor laughing SAR guys wear helmets or they don't leave the parking lot.

Actually, those two deputies had gone in on foot and were just arriving at the victim when I arrived.  There were a couple more SAR right behind me and they were all wearing helmets.  We did not think to take in extra helmets for the deputies.

The deputies that had been wearing helmets took a wrong turn and did not join us until we were almost back to the parking lot with the victim.

But yes, no excuse...they were without helmets.

Good observation...I had not noticed.  I guess the deputies figured they did not need to wear helmets or seat belts because we were going so slow.  We crawled out of there since there was no hurry and any bouncing just caused more pain for our victim.

AngryI hate to throw salt on a wound but from looking at the pictures, I see a cattle guard that restricts the width of machine entering the trail. Is this also another case of oversized vehicle going around the cattle guard? By the way what trail was this on?

I am not sure about the width on the side-by-side.  Sorry, there are alot of details on this rescue I do not know and what I do know I can't share some of.

The SxS belonged to the victim.  The trail is the Long Hollow Trail in Spanish Fork Canyon.  The accident happened somewhere up on the ridge and this was the route the second victim had started driving down with his badly broken arm and possible broken sholder.  There were other issues but I had better not mention them on an open forum.  Another person in the victim's party drove their vehicles and trailers around to this side (the Spanish Fork Canyon) to pick up the SXS.  I do not know where they had parked and their route.

I also noticed that people had been avoiding the cattle guard by driving down into the stream bed and coming back up on the other side.  And yes, the deputy drove the SxS down into the stream bed avoiding the cattle guard.

Sounds like we need another  Trail Patrol project to keep people on the trail and out of the stream .

Maybe if the trail was blocked off so that you had to use the cattle guard then  this accident wouldn't have happened in the first place .

Lets do the project and then I nominate Chris to be in charge of the after project ride .  Grin Grin

I am good for the challenge...who is going to help?

I was looking at how to do that.  I think we will have to move the cattle guard a little since we would have to move half the mountain to block the stream bed access.

What do you guys do to lock the cattle guards in place?  I think there is a good chance this guard has been moved since it has a highway going around it (a truck could go around it).

Honestly, I do not think this was their route.  I think the victim decided to come down this way after his buddy was flown out in a medical helicopter and he was driving out with a broken arm and possible shoulder.  Their trucks were not on this side and they had to bring around their trailer to get his SxS.

I wish I had known.  I doubt they would press charges since he was driving himself out injured.  I will look through my other photos of the incident to see if we could make a plan on how to do the guard.

This is an instance where we can really help . Maybe we need to do a little signing too . Let me know what you think , Chris .

Valleysol , what kind of authorization do we need to be able to get this done ?

I can run up there any morning in the next three days.  Valleysol, who put the cattle guard where it is and do we have the authorization to move it so that it is not an open invitation to drive around out.  I almost think someone moved it from where it was placed or maybe cut down a fence that was attached to it.  It is sorta sitting in the backside of a clearing with easy access around it.

They are generally placed at the fence line for grazing sections or property boundaries such as the Forest or BLM boundary. Moving it might not be an option. Fixing the fence and or building barricades however would be an option. My suggestion would be to contact the forest service office for the area and find out who is the ranger in charge of that area and find out from him. Most are very willing to let us fix an existing but damaged fence and/or build something to stop off-road travel.

Ok, who wants to tag along?  I will go up and look at the cattle guard and run all of the Long Hollow trail.  I will be at the trail head at 8am on Saturday if anybody wants to go for a short ride.  I will do any trail cleanup as well that looks like it need to be done.

Long hollow is in Spanish Fork canyon a few miles east of Billies Mountain.

It was a good excuse to go ride Long Hollow, Teat Mtn, over to Sheep Creek for a burger (wow what a burger), back over to Monks Hollow and then back over and down Long Hollow.  I will post pictures of the Cattle Guard and the huge area where the wider vehicles are driving past it.

I went on another ATV crash last night.  All of them so far in the last month have had one common factor...a little too much to drink.  The one last night was up Dairy Fork in Spanish Fork Canyon.  He has multiple fractures but at least no head truama.  I never saw a helmet.  A world of hurts!

Here are some photos.  He proable tumbled down 50 feet of bank before stopping in the creek.  He was lying close to the ATV.

Dave (new forum member MrHydraulics) and I went up to Long Hollow to get pictures of the Cattle Guard we have been discussing.  Here are he photos.  As you can see the track bypassing the cattle guard is quite large.  Any suggestions Vallysol?  I am will to help what ever it takes.  I am doing this because if we do not care for and maintaine the trails in our area then someone else may do it for us and the trail could just as easy go away.

O.K. On the Long Hollow trail, I talked with Duane Resare at the Unita FS office. He is going to check to see about getting some fenceing for the area. He will also let us know if they can use our help to install it. We have worked with Duane for many years, so I know he will follow up. If we don't hear from him it will mean that he got one of his trail crews to compleate the project.

There has just been an ATV accident on trail 061 or 067 near Elizebeth Ridge north of Mirror Lake.  EMS is just getting to her.  They are bringing in Life Flight with a hoist.  Guess she went off a wooded cliff and went down the hill 75'.  I hope it is not too bad and I also hope it is not one of the regulars here on the forum.  I will keep everyone posted if there is anything more.  Hope she will be ok.  SARider
