Much better informed and thought out than the stuff Patty Henetz has been writing for them lately. This article is required reading for anyone hoping to understand SUWA and the long-running public land controvesry in Utah.

I sure hope nobody buys into this. A solfter aproch, " Gage me with a Fork" But I do think they are starting to respond to what we all
have done and are changing there tune. they will alwways going to after the same old crap but trying to solften the public. What we have been up to has helped a bunch. Lets keep it up.

It appears that the more proactive approach by the ATV riders in Utah is having an effect on SUWA and The Wilderness Society. However, now is not the time to feel like the atv community has accomplished the end all with the visible Paria protest. Now is the time to stand up and be a little louder and really let the US Govt land agencies know that as Mike Habbeshaw said, "we aint gonna take it anymore." Let's not allow complacency to creep back in. Let's try to push this August event even more to keep the pressure coming from the ATVers side of the argument.

Thanks for posting this link to the article. I don't normally read the Trib because of the negative effects it has on my blood pressure!

I was impressed as I read the article by a couple of numbers. First, SUWA claims some 15,000 members who pay a membership of $30 annually. Combine that with some well-heeled sugar daddies and probably some investment income, and they have a $2 million a year budget. Of those 15,000 members, about 3100 are Utahns. Did I get that right?

Now, compare those numbers to these: In Utah, there are 28,768 registered snowmobiles, and 184,088 ATVs and dirtbikes, for a total of 212,856 registered off-highway vehicles. Add to that all the "off-highway" capable jeeps, trucks, SUVs, etc. And that just represents Utah residents. Already this year we have sold nearly 15,000 nonresident OHV permits to visitors.

So somebody tell me, why are we letting SUWA dictate public land management in Utah? OHV registrations outnumber SUWA membership by nearly 15 to 1. Yet, they have a well organized and funded organization that sets the agenda.

Can you imagine what we as an off-highway community could do if we had a well organized state OHV association that functioned as a common voice for all of us in the political arena??? If each of us ponied up $10 to that organization for each OHV/jeep/etc that we own, we'd easily have a large enough (>$3M) annual budget to fight the fight. Throw in a few extra bones and we'd stomp SUWA into obscurity where they belong. I think it is time for us to figure out how to get such an organization formed, and do it.

When you break it down that way they are not so tough after all.
Now multiply that X2 USA ALL and Blue Ribbon Coalition.
Member ship and and extra $10 dollars. You spend $100.00 a year for a good cause. My thinking is doing with out something once in a while and you've made your 100 back with a extra trail to ride or one that you can ride again after being closed for a while.
