ALERT! Where you could ride but NOW you cannot

If congress passes a house bill (H.R. 1925) you will not be able to ride in many areas of Utah.

Am I mistaken, there doesn't seem to be any names on the list in that bill from Utah. Why is that, peope from other areas that have no clue about the country involved outside of what they have been told, and most likely a lot of that may not be the real thing need to take care of there own state and leave ours alone.  Yes I live in Nevada but I am a native of Utah and will always will be.
Okay I'll shut up and go back to sleep or something now.

I contacted my Congressman and just received his response:

--
Dear Mr. King,

Thank you for contacting my office regarding the Red Rock Wilderness Act.  At a time when nearly 60% of Utah's land is owned by the federal government, adding another 9.4 million acres to the roll is not prudent policy.  I would also like to note that not one member of the Utah delegation is supporting this bill.

There is no doubt portions of Red Rock Country in southern Utah deserve the recognition the National Wilderness Preservation System would give.  However, the crafters of this bill are not simply concerned with wilderness preservation, they are using the sanctified wilderness designation as a tool to curb American energy development and motorized outdoor recreation.

Upon passage, 9.4 million acres of Utah land will be off-limits to outdoor enthusiasts, recreation seekers, and energy developers.  Off-highway vehicle users are the lifeline for some rural Utah cities and towns, and if this bill passes, those towns will fall deeper and deeper into economic recession.  The OHV markets, as well as the energy market provide some of the most dependable and high paying jobs for rural Utahns.

Recently, the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands held a legislative hearing on this bill.  I was proud to join with the other four members of Utah's Congressional delegation in voicing our opposition.  I will continue to oppose this bill and the out-of-state sponsors who support it.

                                                                            Sincerely,

                                                                            Jason Chaffetz
                                                                            Member of Congress

This bill was first introduced by Wayne Owens about 20 years ago and less than half the size that it is now. He felt that if they could get half of that it would be good. Now it is almost 10 million acres and there is no talk of accepting less than that! As mentioned here, the sponsors are all from back east. I say let's make Central Park wilderness! A lot of the lands in this bill meet the requirements about the same as Central park.

This bill used to be more symbolic than anything, with it not getting very far in the process. Now days it is getting very close to reality and has moved further in the process than ever before. We need to stand up and be heard or we will be riding in each other's back yards!

Wow, how can we get government to spend more money?  Let's put a high speed rail system through the new wilderness powered by windmills camo'ed to look like the red rock cliffs.  T Boone Pickins where are you when we need you.

Instead of Rio, let's have the Olympics in Kanab, next to the wilderness.  We need an olympic village in Kanab.  We could build it with Stimulus II money.  Hey, our great great great grandchildren will gladly pay for it.  And all we have to do is borrow more money from the Red Chinese.

Let's just do it!

I don't know if anyone of you caught the front page  of the SL Tribune last week or not  but SUWA said that they were sure that this bill would not pass . Their reasoning was that with no support from anyone in Utah it didn't stand a chance . They also said that they were thrilled just to get  exposure for the bill . USA -ALL says that's  a smoke screen , it may very well be . But this is the other side .

It also said in the Trib that they expected more involvement in the type of wilderness designation  that occurred in  Washington County . That means if the bill doesn't pass , which they say it won't , then they are going to fight county by county .

If that's the way the fight is going to go ,  then we need to get going . I'm sure that everyone is tired of hearing  same old line about calling your congressman but that is what  we have to do . It also means going to meetings  and getting involved when we would rather be doing other things . Hate to say it but thats what it's going to take .            '

When is someone from the west going to introduce a bill to build an radioactive waste site in the northeast.  Then tell them to butt out of our state.  I also keep getting info from Matheson who says he is sponsering a wilderness area in th northern part of the state.  I am out of the country for a while.  Can anyone set me straight on what is happening?  I love to ride near my home up AF canyon.  I sure hope to not loose more land in that area.
