Just an interesting note here...

We all remember the story of the folks way back when in Boston when they decided that they were being taxed too much and threw a little "tea party"....

So, do you know how much they were being taxed?  What was the proposed tax rate?

Go do some digging.  I was mighty surprised when I read it.

Any guesses???

I think we're long past due for another 'tea party'.

This was a new tax to be imposed.  Tax me?  Yep.  We're going to tax the tea you drink!  Imagine!

Well, they didn't have much in the way of roads then and no fuel to tax.  So they taxed their TEA.

It was to be pretty hefty too - 25% on their tea.  And that was later reduced by 2/3 - so about 8 percent of the cost of the tea.

Total tax to the average colonist would be less than 1 PERCENT of his income.

Read that again...

LESS THAN ONE PERCENT!!!!

I look at my paycheck each month and see how much is going out.

I guarantee you it is far more than one percent!!!

After the taxes and other fees I pay (insurance premiums and this and that), I don't see even 50 percent of what I earn.

I tell you what - I'm ready to PARTY!!!

I'm ready to secede from this old Union!!

When I see statements like this on the internet I often wonder just how accurate they are.  In this case, I find that I kind of want (almost hope) to be able to beleive it.  Unfortunately, we see so much in the media that we can easily just accept it.  But I read what Snopes had to say about it.  As explained by Snopes they could not find verification of these statements and this has been around for several years.   I think that it is indeed unfortunate that it is so easy to not question these statements because of the things we so often see in the media and to paint a black eye on the entire group because of the actions of a minority.   I feel bad that I cannot quickly stand up and defend them as a group against this kind of thing.   But I have to agree with Snopes summary statement.

“Some of our Congressional representatives certainly have less-than-stellar personal records, but many of them are in fact dedicated, honest, hard-working public servants.  Tarring them all with the brush of anonymous, vague accusations does no one any good.”

So I'm still not ready to get rid of all of them in one fell swoop.  Just the "way too many" that don't earn the respect of those they are supposed to be serving.
