What Is Your Favorite Trail In UT?
09/30/10 at 10:45:18

There are a lot of ATV trails to choose from, and although I would like to ride them all, I just don't have the time off from work to be able to do that.  It would be great if people could list their favorite trail in UT, with a brief direction on where it is at.  Then the rest of us time challenged individuals can choose amongst the better trails, and start riding those first.

I'll start.

My favorite trail thus far is Circleville to Antimony, via Rocky Ford Trail.  It is shown on the Fremont Trail System map.

No doubt in my mind, the Anderson Dairy Trail #89 on the Paiute.

It's hard to be the Barney Lake back trail, or the 68 on the Tushers, but then the rocky ford trail, or ya the Al Gay trail, but then, oh crap they all are the best...

I would have to say the Poison spider, gold bar, and gold spike trail in moab.  I could ride those trails over and over again.  But under that I just love to ride so anywhere is great.

Up until last thursday, I'd have to say the 54,53,33 up to Milo's kitchen.

However, last thursday we ventured up to Mayfield and rode the west area of the Arapeen.   We staged at Birch creek.  Rode up the 2 to Skyline Drive and then dpropped in on Trail 29.  An awesome trail of two-track that took us to multiple ponds and lakes and beaver dams.

This is the area where I understand a landslide occured a few years back. A sign we came across referred to it as the Red Pine Slide.  This trail ended at trail #21.

From there we rode up and over to see Ferron reservoir.
I look forward to my next trip as I plan to explore more of the Arapeen.

So, favorite trail to date........Trail 29.

Interesting.  What do you do when you get to the end of the trail?  Do you turn around and ride the trail backwards when you're on an ATV?  In a Jeep you just air up the tires, hop on the highway, and head back to town.

Dez,

Try not to let our secret out too much.

I've been riding this area all my life. Started out on an old Tote Goat. My dad move out to Utah from Ohio in 1952. That fall he went deer hunting and ended up there in 12-Mile Canyon. Our family has been going there since.

I have to say the trail 29 is ONE of my favorite trails in that area.

So how did you like the last mile or so of trail 29? Quite a 'rush' as you climb out of that bowl up to Skyline drive, eh?

Next time you're there, try out trail 38. You have to catch 35 just a mile or two below 12-Mile Flat Campground. This is actually the 6-Mile Canyon road. Some really pretty country down the upper half of that road too. About half way up/down that canyon, you catch trail 38. Ride it back up to Skyline drive. Very nice area.

You want some ADVENTURE???  Try that Red Pine Trail.  Heed the signs though.

This trail crosses the big slide area.  Back in 1983 that whole mountain decided to change positions.  I sure would have liked to have been in a helicopter watching!!  I can't even imagine the noise that must've been made as all those slides happened.  Thousands of acres of trees just flattened and thousands of acres of mountain MOVING!!

The whole Arapeen area is my favorite.

I had a difficult time choosing just one, but I would say that the Coal Wash loop is my favorite. It's in the central San Rafael Swell, and it has a few options--you can either use Fix-It Pass or Devil's Racetrack to connect the north and south forks of Coal Wash to form the loop. The first link below has photos from the Fit-It Pass loop, and the second has photos from the Devil's Racetrack loop (with a few other trails as well):

A close second favorite for me would be the trail into the Book Cliffs (between Price and Green River) up onto Beckwith Plateau:

Rode this one yesterday. It's still nice and technical in some spots and is even better if you cross over to the 97 and wander through those dense trees.

I have to agree with Udink . If I could only ride one  area for the rest of my life it would be the Swell  and Coal Wash is the center of the best of the Swell . ( IMHO )

Besides the trails Udink mentioned I also like to hit Cane Wash , Eagle Canyon  and  Eva  Conover

There's  a lot more to the Swell than that but it seems like that's where I end up most of the time .

At the bottom of my blog posting, there's a link to a Google Earth .KML file, and also a Google Maps link, that have my GPS track and a few waypoints:

And attached is a .GPX file with the track and waypoints.  The river crossing can be the trickiest part of the ride depending on the time of year.  A friend who'd ridden this before me recommended that I not attempt it at over 50 CFS, but I crossed it at just over 60 CFS, and that was definitely at the upper limit of what my ATV could handle.  Sure made for an exciting time, though!   Shocked

Devil's Racetrack and Fix-It Pass in the San Rafael Swell.  Take a rope and get help going up/down the stair steps!  Fun and challenging ride and post card scenery.

My favorite trail is actually a road/wash near Big Water, Ut.  It's the Tippets Canyon road up to Mustard Point.  Great views of Lake Powell and the road itself can be nasty or easy depending on when the last time the rain fell.  You can make it an all day loop going down Nipple Creek wash on the other side of Haycock Point and then down around Wahweap Creek to the Fish Hatchery.  Keep an eye out for Desert Bighorn sheep while you're there.  They are often found right in the road or just above it.

Second favorite road is the already mentioned above Beckwith Plateau/Mt. Elliot ride.  Just don't try fording the PRice river until after the spring runoff has long gone.  Kinda neat place since it's only accessible by ATV for 4 or 5 months per year.  Also great place to find Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep.

For the absolute best view (and not a bad ride although you don't need an atv for it) is the Bown's overlook on the southeast side of the Boulder Plateau.  Makes the Grand Canyon view look small!  And you probably won't see another human being near there!

A beautiful scenic ride up a canyon with water crossings all the way.  Those of you that have ventured here know the drill:  splash or be splashed!  Too much fun!  I always wonder what QF will do next.   Grin

Thanks for the help.
Its hard to find favorites when we don't visit that often from Mn.
We brought the ATP there once, and now we're ruined for riding
in other places around here.
We tented/ backpacked Comb Ridge one trip.
and flew a small plane to the Caveman Fly-in 2011.
Its good your getting a better spring than the last 2 years.
We hope to be back there next month.
happy day

Reviving this 9 year old thread ...

I had the chance to ride Trail #89 yesterday.  What a fantastic trail.  A bit tight for a SxS, but we made it through without a mark.

I've done all my favorite trails so far this year, and the rankings have changed in the 10 years since I started this thread, largely due to maintenance, or lack there of, on these trails.  Now that I have them fresh in my mind, I have noticed a trend.  Here is the list.

1 PST 68, from Beaver
2 PST 73, from Otter Creek
3 PST 89, Anderson Dairy Trail
4 Max Reid Trail section of 01 Paiute Trail
5 PST 88
6 Wade's Canyon section of 01 Paiute Trail
7 Rocky Ford Trail
8 PST 05, from Beaver

The trend I see is that the top 5 are all 50" trails.  They are also all mountain trails, not a single desert trail or riding area in the list.  Rocky Ford Trail has moved from 1st to 7th due to lack of maintenance.
