Marysvale Snow Melt!
06/12/11 at 00:00:26

The snow melt here in Marysvale is reflected in the picture that follows.  Pine Creek or some call it Bullion Creek is swollen and running fast and furious.  In the picture Dave Pratz is placing sandbags at the foundation of the Trading Post while being supplied by Milo Medley and Parke Phillips.  So far other structures in Marysvale remain safe thanks to Piute County's work in cleaning out the culvert and creek bottom.  The Trading Post is a non-commercial coop donated by Lizzie and Charlies for the benefit of the citizens of Marysvale and for the convenience or our visitors.  We continue to hope that the sandbags hold and the creek doesn't rise much more.

Thanks for the pic.

Have you gone up on top, or as far as the snow would allow? I am curious what the snow pack looks like and any guess when anyone could get over the top. For example, Fremont Indian state park over to Hoovers.

We were in Scipio near Maple bench campground and tried to go to the top via South Willow canyon, but ran into a drift about 40 feet long. It was only my young son and I, so we did not attempt it. we busted through several smaller ones, but I was in no mood to dig myself out.

I am guessing in 2 weeks, an ATV could get to the top to look around

I had only seen the 2nd pic, but then saw the 1st and realized the magnitude of the situation

I should have said this first before asking about riding.:

I hope that all are safe there. I hate to see so much of a person's life washed away in a matter of moments. It is heart breaking. We have been the victims of flooding, but never to the extent of what is happening around our state.

You might want to pile those sand bags a little higher. In lesser snow years I have seen it boil out from under the bridge so hard it goes up and over the board walk around the trading post. Quite often it just cant fit all the water under the bridge and it spills over the hwy there.  Undecided

Well Gary, we are hoping with the county digging out the creek and widening it along with piling up a levee on both sides, along with cleaning all the rocks and dirt out of the concrete culvert that we should be all right.  We are already having flows bigger than we had last year.  We are hoping with the increased channel with all the trees removed from them we are basically sucking the water down to the river.

Salt you can get to Hoovers via Deer Creek or the River road now.  Now getting over the top to Big Johns Flat...well, that may take a while.

The pass between Bullion Canyon and Cottonwood is open now, went over yesterday. There's still a snowdrift right at the top of Barney Lake trail. Looks like someone slid down it, but you couldn't get up it, (as of yesterday). It won't last much longer the way the weather's been.

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency first by inflation then by deflation, the banks and the corporations will grow up around them, will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered

Is there a new guess as to when the 01 will be open over the top.  Coming 2 weeks later this year because we missed it by 2 days last year.

Flipper, we really can't answer that question right now, there was a megaslide up there and about 700 yards of trail were taken out.  It all depends on when Piute County can get there equipment in up there safely.  That's the best answer I can give right now.

As I said in response to another thread..

I'm not sure why everyones getting so worked up over a little bit of snow slide damage to an already snow closed road. It happens, thats nature at her best and worst all in one. Ive seen them quite a few times over the years up there and lets not forget the pass is still blocked by snow further up so nothings changed. In normal snow years the pass might not be open yet and we broke snow pack level records in Utah this year. We couldn't get there if if we wanted to even if there wasn't a bit of slide damage. By the time the snow melts the County will have the road repaired and all will be well with the world again.

Remember last year the Tushar pass didn't open until mid August, just in time for the UTV Jamboree.

Besides we still have 2900 miles of trails and routes in the area we CAN ride. Don't let this discourage anyone from getting out on the Paiute and having fun.

Yea you just might have to ride a few of the other couple thousand miles of trails and route in the area.  Grin
