Logandale, NV - 09 Jan - 13 Jan
12/27/12 at 16:17:39

I'm heading south to Logandale, NV on 09 January. I'll be taking my 5th wheel, ATV and my bro-in-law's motorcycle + a sport quad.

I'm hopeful again this time that we may find a route to Mesquite, but I've tried in years past without success.

If you'd like to join, PM me.

As it stands now, there will be 2-3 RV's and possibly one SxS in our group.

It will be nice to get out of the snow for a bit, and just before I have to re-enter the world of full time employment (I've been enjoying part-time work + a full time paycheck since Sept.).

In Mesquite there is an ATV shop next to the lumber yard.  Take west Pioneer from I-15.  Go up about 1/4 mile to signal light, turn left.  There will be a car dealer on your left.  Go down to the lumberyard.  Turn left into the driveway heading back toward I-15.

The ATV shop will be on your left.  Ask there about trails from Logandale.  If anyone in the area knows they do.  they have a map book of the area.

Thanks. I may have to stop by. As it stands, I've ridden pretty much all of Logandale these past few years. For now, I'm just trying to find a legal route North to Mesquite/Gold Butte.

I have some .TPO that were given to me that show a route through town, I just need to get these converted to Garmin tracks (.gdb). GPSBabel errors out when trying to convert.

The file first uploaded had a corrupt header. I fixed it, converted the .tpo  and uploaded a Garmin version.

Correction to directions to ATV shop in Mesquite:

Exit on West Mesquite Blvd to W. Pioneer Blvd, turn left, (car dealer will be on your left once you turn onto West Pioneer Blvd.  Go up to the Lumber yard and turn left on Cimarron Ct. just before the lumber.  Go to end of road (towards I-15) and the ATV shop is on the left.   Their phone is:  702 236-48022-346

Hey Bruteforce, I would really like all your tracks from down in the Logandale/Mesquite area.  We might be going down that way in a couple of months and I would like to put together some rides for our group.

I don't see where you can go into Mesquite from this trail? Am I missing something? James, when you rode Mesquite area, did you ever find a way across the river? I know I looked, but the way was blocked.

I have 5 tracks that show routes from Logandale and past the river, but they're in .TPO, not .GDB. I need to just print them out, write down the more important waymark GPS coords, then put together my own.

I know I couldn't find a way south from Gold Butte, because the BLM had fenced and blocked off all the pertinent washes..

That was the problem I had also...all roads led to fences or signage. But I have 'heard' there is away, but no one is giving up their secrets!

I have an employee that says his brother has done it on the south side, so I plan on picking someone's brain if no one comes up with a route.

Well, at the very least, I've discovered some new trails that I haven't yet ridden in Logandale. I have a trail system mapped out now that's about 227 miles of total riding (that number includes back tracking, dead-ends and a couple of loops)  Smiley

I'm hopeful by the weekend, I'll have plotted out a northerly route through town and up the mountain toward the river.

I'll be glad to get into warmer (40-50F) temperatures, provided I can get my 5th wheel through the ice and snow that's accumulated along my back drive-way.  Undecided

BF,
Are you camping at the dune area or on the other side(east) of the main road into Logandale making it easier to access the trails you have in mind ?

More than likely, I'll be camping to the RIGHT of the dune area (right of the split), probably a mile or so down that little canyon.

GPSr coordinates (approx and if the spot is available):

N 36 35.203 W 114 31.998

Why are you trying to get from Logandale to Mesquite?  Just wanting to ride over to Mesquite to eat at the buffet, and then ride back?  Or are you wanting to keep riding from Mesquite, and keep on exploring from there?

If you want to keep exploring from Mesquite, there are lots of places to check out.  Last weekend the wife and I took the Jeep down to Mesquite, and turned off into the main wash just east of town and drove through the corriduct under the freeway and headed north.  41 miles north of the freeway we turned back out of the wash and onto the main road that goes to Carp and Elgin.  From there you can take any number of other roads.  We came out on pavement at Caliente, after 110 miles of dirt.

No real reason, short of wanting to explore and connect areas. Logandale doesn't have Casinos, so riding from Logandale, playing blackjack, having Prime rib for lunch, then heading back..sounds good to me.

Update:

Thanks to another site member, I now have a basic idea of how to get through town, up Morman Mesa Road and toward Mesquite via two different routes.

Then, that person's tracks also show some great riding along the river and around Mesquite and Gold Butte.

Sheesh! I just tried (several times) calling Clark County police to confirm they'd have no issue with a quick jaunt through Moapa/Logandale town while en route to Morman Mesa road, but they have a full voicemail box and don't appear to answer the phone!

I will continue calling through mid-next week to confirm that if we do this trek, we won't have issues.

Considering the town, it's doubtful there will be problems. I've driven parallel to the train tracks before and most locals zip and up and down the streets on their sport quads..

I think the ONLY big concern would be the park rangers when down by the river. That is park of the Lake Mead Recreational Park and I have heard...they like to take your ATV's. Just saying...

You're probably correct, but Lake Mead would be further south/east than the Morman Mesa Road. I was referring to the portion of the river further North/East of Lake Mead (between Logandale and Mesquite). I'll be calling the BLM Monday to confirm.

Thanks.

For those of you coming up (or down), let me know approx. what time you'll be arriving on Sat. I'll have my 5th wheel (white RoadWarrior <you can't miss it> ) about a mile down the RIGHT side split.

I'll hang around and wait for everyone to show so we can ride together. Weather (at least now) is expected to be in the 50-60's.. which is a far cry from the 7-17F we've had here lately.

I'll probably leave around 7:30 to 8:00. I'll be parking at the first Trailhead and we can ride in to meet at the Campsite.

You are talking about the parking area with the cement pad? I will try and be there @ the same time (like Charlie, unless work calls). Ok, so far, I will see you there. Looking forward to meeting you for the first time.

So, those of you from the Vegas and/or St. George area that are coming in Sat. morning - where do you want to ride? I have tracks now that take us along the Colorado and up to Mesquite. I also have a 60+ mile track that tracks to the South and West in a big loop. Prefer to stay in the Logandale trails / Valley of Fire area, or cut through town and head North/East toward Mesquite?

The Mesquite track is ~70 miles, so you may need extra fuel.

Oh, if you want the tracks in advance, PM me at james@utahkings.com

Cutting thru Logandale headin to Mesquite is ok as long as we don't have any trouble with the law in the town of Mesquite not sure of their laws with non street legal quads. Doing a loop south of Logandale sounds good also either way works.
PM the tracks to me please James thanks a bunch.

I agree with Charlie, don't won't a hassle with the law in Mesquite, but we don't even have to go into town if we are not sure. Anything sounds good here, so PM me and send the tracks please!

I've read through this whole thread a couple of times and can't see what day you guys are going to do this ride on.  The title of the thread says January 9th - 13th, but which of those days are you going to do the ride on?  I would like to try to come if it is on the 12th.  I think I would bring the Wildcat if that is ok.

I was just at Logandale today; it was 52 degrees, with perfect weather.  I've ridden Logandale a bunch of times on the ATV and side by side, so decided to do the loop in my pickup truck this time, just for something different.  The truck is GMC Canyon that has a 4" Rancho lift, 33s, and ARB air lockers at both ends.  I'm sure the Rancho lift helps some, but I sure couldn't tell in those whoops.  That trucks suspension sucked pretty bad, LOL.  We took the old highway from the Carp/Elgin exit to Mesquite, and then on to Littlefield, on the way home.

Anyway, let me know what day you're doing the ride, and what time you're meeting.  I gather you'll be meeting one mile down the right hand canyon, just past the fork that is just past the main staging area, and at a big white Heartland Roadwarrior 395 5th Wheel Toy Hauler with a Dodge truck hooked to it.

My friend and I have been trying to find routes in that area with our full size four wheelers (Jeeps), so I'm interested in seeing what you guys find.    I'm going to try and be there Saturday morning, assuming I can get the trailer out of the yard with all the snow and ice we have.  And I just blew an air seal inside the rear differentials air locker on my truck, that I won't have time to get repaired by Saturday.  The driveway is going to be a challenge.

Send me an email to james@utahkings.com and I'll send you a decent set of tracks around the Logandale and Mesquite areas.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you, except Chan, that is  Wink Met him already -- nice guy, good to chat with, probably better after a beer!  Grin

Where are you driving in from 3TV? I've had to fire up 2x space heaters and the furnace in my RV. Tomorrow, I have to dig a 3' pile of snow/ice out from in front of the 5th wheel, so I can drag it out of the icey RV pad/driveway.  Shocked

Fortunately, it looks like we're going to warm up a bit Tue/Wed (to just above freezing), and that's when I'll load up the water.

Well, that was work. Even though the 5th wheel has been sitting since my last trip in October, some water had pooled and not drained in the fresh water intake. I had to pour over a gallon of hot water down there and use a 10' length of cut hose to push the ice down.

At any rate, I'm all loaded and we'll be pushing off tomorrow between 10am-noon.

I'm looking forward to not seeing any more ice, snow and salt on the ground!

In my group, there will be my bro-in-law Ken (on Yamaha motobikes), my father-in-law Gene on an Arctic Cat and myself. Sometime between Wed & Sat, Gary E. will be joining from Vegas. On Thursday, we'll have my nephew joining us from Vegas, then on Saturday those of you coming in from Cedar City and Vegas.

On Saturday, we'll pow-wow and decide where we want to ride. I have a few ideas, but I need to see what everyone's up for (distance/mileage/steel butt, etc).

See you all sometime tomorrow or thereafter!

Hey Brute,

Just spoke to my friend that lives in Logandale and he said he rode the trail through town a couple weeks ago and everythings good.  It's been a couple years since I rode it and wasn't sure if rains had washed out the "bridge" over the Muddy River.

His only request is to go slow after crossing the tracks because the trail has a lot of poof dirt and the residents get upset when their homes and cars get dusted.   Smiley

Also, the only place you may encounter law enforcement will be crossing Moapa Valley Blvd.

Hope ya have a ball!

Well, we made it into the area around 7pm yesterday (in the dark..again!)

We're about 2 miles down the canyon at the RIGHT hand split (left hand takes you to the sand dunes area).

Oh, I wish I had my GoPro on last night. The guys had a few drinks and started up with the Karaoke. I'm hopeful Gary E. took out his hearing aids!  Grin

Update on the weather situation here:

This morning, we started the day at 60 degrees F with a few scattered clouds. By noon/1pm, the clouds rolled in, high winds kicked up and the temperature really started dropping. Although it "SAYS" its 54F outside, it really feels like 40.

Bring your warm gear..

High winds are here and the temps are dropping fast. Weatherbug is saying 40% chance of rain now, with morning temps at 32F. It doesnt look like rain (yet)..

Great, but tiring day of riding today. We followed a trail that just about took us to I-15 and the Piute Indian Casino just off I-15. Suddenly, the trail turned single track, and got just a bit too gnarly for the ATV's and 1x SxS to follow safely, so we turned around and went back to camp.

We have total white out conditions in Cedar City right now.  It is really dumping down the snow, and its supposed to snow all night tonight and all day tomorrow.  Hate to say it guys, but I'm going to have to sit this one out.  My driveway is so steep and narrow that I'll never get the trailer back in if I managed to get it out.  And I don't want to have to tow the side by side down black ridge in what will likely be very bad road conditions on Saturday morning.

I'm bummed.  I was looking forward to this.
