Recapture Canyon protest ride
04/17/14 at 21:16:30

I just finished reading the article in the SLC Tribune about the San Juan county commissioner planning a protest ride into Recapture Canyon on May,8. He is doing this to put pressure on the BLM to get new trails approved. I am not sure that this is the best tactic. I understand the frustration, but I can see SUWA turning this around to say all ATV riders are a bunch of loose cannons, with no respect for the law. They will try to use this to try closing more trails. Anybody have any other thoughts on this.

Sounds similar to the protest ride they did in Kane county a few years ago when they rode the Paria river corridor.  SUWA showed up as did the BLM rangers and Kane county sheriff.  I wasn't there but the paper reported that everyone behaved themselves and no tickets were written.   Last I heard, the route was declared a grandfathered byway and Kane county won the lawsuit against the BLM, but the "no motorized travel beyond this point" sign was still at the end of the road by the Paria townsite when I hiked the river last fall. Angry

In my opinion, the protest ride helped Kane county bring attention to the matter.  Not sure how it will pan out for San Juan county, but I know those folks that live there won't put up with much gov't or SUWA BS.

The only feeling better than needing something on the trail and having it, is having it and not needing it! Ride prepared!
