Recent Capitol Reef Trail Ride and Stay!

We recently spent a few days in the Capitol Reef area, specifically Torrey, Utah. Without much experience in the RV park camping thing, I have very little point of reference.  Nevertheless, I can outline our observations as it pertains to personal comfort, living accommodations, amenities, and the trails we discovered.  We stayed at Thousand Lakes RV Park because I wanted lots of room to park my vehicle and ATV trailer.  The Park has a number of cabins and we chose the deluxe model because it comes with Air conditioning and its own bathroom with shower.  I can only assume that other cabins do not have these amenities since they are not listed with such on the website.  The fee for renting the deluxe cabin is $65.00 dollars per night.  Our only real complaint with the accommodation is the fact that the air conditioning is inadequate for the square footage if the temperature outside is above 90 degrees and the wireless internet may have worked in other areas of the park but, not in ours.  Nonetheless, the comfort level is only slightly better than the restaurants in the area.  It reminded me of traveling through Europe and trying to find an establishment that didn't feel like a steam bath.  Between Europe's propaganda that AC will ultimately kill you and the baby boomer yuppie types that desire a more politically correct atmosphere, it established once again that we shall never travel to this or any other area without our own air conditioned Motorhome during the summer months.  What can I say, I enjoy my comfort.  That being said, the management of the Thousand Lakes RV Park are friendly and accommodating. There was plenty of parking as promised and the pool is always nice and warm.  There are a number of ATV trails and the "Great Western Trail" that begins about a mile from the park is one you'll not want to miss.  Unfortunately, if you have your own ATV, even if it is street legal; you might as well stay home, if you expect to explore the famous Capitol Reef Cathedral Loop. The national park service due to some logic that escapes reason seems to think that people that drive ATV's can't be trusted to remain on authorized trails and visitors renting jeeps will.  Keep in mind that while your stay with Thousand Lakes RV Park is very reasonable; if you own an ATV, class II or otherwise, you're better off visiting a more ATV friendly place.

Some of the best trails anywhere go in and out of Torrey . But then I never worried about how well the A/C worked . I'm too busy riding to worry  about the air conditioner ....

Thanks for your comments perhaps you didn't understand I was referring to Cathedral Loop?  Beside, I find it uncomfortable to sleep on my ATV.  Grin

I understand your comments . As I'm sure you know ,   there is much , much more to being an ATVer than just straddling a quad and hitting the throttle .

Knowing where to go , where you can't go and how to ride a machine safely and legally are a huge part of being an operator .

Even though the NPS doesn't like quads, the State deserves a lot of credit for allowing atvs to become street legal . I know what a shock it is to try and go somewhere and then find out you can't ride  . If I have questions and I can't figure it out , I usually load up the Jeep and try to see some of the country I'm thinking about .

I hope it works better for you next time . And if you need help with the A/C , let me know . I've been an HVAC contractor for over 20 years now . lol

Thanks QF for the advice.  You make a lot of sense!  I appreciate you taking the time to reply.  You're absolutely right about giving credit where credit is due as far as the authorities that are ATV friendly.  I'm kind of a "Don't Tread on Me" type and sometimes I feel the need to climb up on the old Soap Box and vent my frustrations.

I am right with you on the responsibility issues too!

If you are ever down this way  I hope you'll consider contacting me for some ATV riding.
