Need a lightweight trailer to carry four ATVs/UTVs
03/12/18 at 19:21:16

For decades I've always owned a truck and a Jeep.  I want to do something different now, and own only one vehicle that can do modest Jeep like back country exploring, and modest truck like work.  I don't do the serious Jeeping on Pritchet Canyon like trails anymore.  And I have sold everything heavy that I used  to tow with a full sized truck.  A full size truck won't fit down the dirt roads well enough either, so it needs to be a mid-size truck, and that may limit towing capacity to 5000 to 6000 lbs.

My large, heavy, enclosed trailer needs to be replaced by an open trailer that is light weight and can haul four utility ATVs.  I'm thinking it will need to be aluminum, and weigh no more than 1500 lbs empty.

Suggestions?

When I think aluminum trailers, Triton, Featherlite, and Aluma come to mind.

Well, part one of the equation is done.  Now I've got the mid-size truck that needs to take the place of both Jeep and truck.   Towing capacity is just 5000 lbs, so the trailer needs to be light weight for sure.

Had to try it out, so this picture was taken just yesterday on the Arizona strip.  Suspension on this little beauty is phenomenally good, easily the best of any OEM street legal vehicle I've ever owned!  I also tried out the lockers, and the rear locker works in any situation (2HI, AWD, 4WD HI, and 4WD LO).  Front locker only works in 4WD LO.

Thanks for the pointers everyone.  I looked at Featherlite, Triton, and Aluma, and they all seemed to be really good quality.  It turns out we have an Aluma dealer right here in town, so that is what I ended up getting.  Here it is, a plain and simple little 14 footer that only weighs 649 lbs.  So it doesn't even have brakes on the trailer.  Talk about low maintenance!  And it doesn't even need to be licensed.
