Wood Decking Preservative for Trailer?
10/06/18 at 16:20:07

I just drove to Vegas today to pick up this new 22' Buggy Hauler, by PJ Trailers.  Driving home in a pouring down rain made me start to wonder what people are using for a preservative for the wood decking.  Do you use a wood preservative?  And if so, what do you use, and why?  Thanks.

This is what I use on my cabin log siding. I redo every three years. Seems to work great.

Thanks.  Maybe I'm over thinking this.  I was on Amazon, and they had twenty pages of different wood preservatives.

When Cal Ranch has a sale on Tractor Fluid, hydraulic oil, I buy a 5 gallon bucket cheap and mix it with 1 gallon of diesel.  I just pour some on the deck and spread it with a course roller on a pole.  It goes on quick and gets better each time it's applied.  When it's time to reapply, I pressure wash first.  It is a little slippery when wet.

Will this work when there's still stain on the decking? I'd assume this would just drip off and get everywhere. I'm always on the look for new methods, especially now that I have a new tow trailer with fresh decking + stain.

There are so many different brands and different preservatives that it is hard to choose.

I am interested in Penofin Ultra Premium Transparent Oil-Based Penetrating Wood Stain, that contains Brazilian Rosewood oil

But have also looked at Thompson's WaterSeal Advanced Natural Wood Protector, and Seal It Green Extreme Bamboo Wood Sealer.

I went with Thompson's Wood Preservative. It is readily available, cheap, and relatively less-toxic. They have really changed Thompson's Wood Preservative since I last used it about ten years ago. It used to be really thin, and like water. Now it is a much thicker liquid, almost like a thin gel. It covers really well and goes on easily. The only thing I didn't really like is that it says not to apply if you don't have at least 48 hours of temps above 50 degrees expected. That is not going to happen this time of year. Roll Eyes I went ahead and applied it anyway, because I didn't want to wait until next May to do the job.
