Fuel system issue?
01/25/19 at 18:24:30

So, @rutcutter and I bought our XP1000's at different times and from different dealers. We use independently sourced fuel; he usually ~110 Octane Ethanol free and me usually PURE88 Ethanol Free. We've tried additives, Seafoam, etc - thinking maybe we both somehow managed to get bad fuel, but we're convinced our simultaneous and EXACT same issues are not fuel, but instead filter or fuel pump related.

Symptoms:

Bombing down the trail, any terrain, any speed and after ~30 miles, it will start acting like its fuel starve. Sometimes you can feather the throttle a little and keep it going, but its very lurchy. In most cases, once that symptom begins, usually you get a backfire or two, then the machine just comes to a slow stop and stalls. Fix seems to be, wait a few seconds, turn the key forward, listen to the fuel pump cycle and start it back up. Usually this is good for another ~5 miles before the stall occurs again.

I phoned in the VIN to Polaris, but they claim no recalls, no known TSB's or issues. We're both under 2000 miles on the bikes at this time.

Ideas?

When this happens....have you opened the fuel cap to see if perhaps the fuel is hot/boiling ?

Yamaha had this issue with the Grizzly 700 awhile back.

Also, does it occur at any/all elevations ?

I don’t believe it to be quality of fuel. I think you've ruled that out.

Just a thought.....  🤔

My RZR  was doing that last summer at elevations over 8000 feet.  Polaris was useless for help.  Dealer and I replaced fuel tank (has the one vent  valve molded into it.) and fuel pump.  Won't know if its fixed until I get back to Utah.  Mine would have an enormous amount of pressure in the fuel tank.  Did you have pressure upon opening fuel cap?

No pressure in the tank. We initially thought maybe 1/2 tank of fuel was creating the issue, but we topped off in Hildale/Colorado City and the issue surfaced just a few miles down the trail.

As for elevation, we've been low elevation the last 6 days.. all in/around Hurricane.

These issues started for both machines around 1500 miles on the odometer. We've run high elevation earlier this summer without issue. Maybe a low elevation issue?  Roll Eyes

Most my experience with fuel has been with carbs but clogged filters or clogged air intake to the tank will both do that.  You stated in one of the other posts that the wind was bad and you are in a sandy area which could cause you both to clog up one or the other at the same time.

We both cleaned and replaced air filters. I had a brand new air filter upon arrival and Rut replaced his on Day 1.

It is the weirdest thing I have ever had to deal with. Two separate quads but when they run, they run great, but when the problem starts it is with both machines at the same time, sometimes at the exact same time. I think it has to do with something atmospheric. Or maybe aliens or radiation from nuclear fall out from the bomb tests. It has only done it on the trips to southern Ut.  It is just frustrating!!!!

I actually meant the tube to allow air into the gas tank as fuel leaves and the fuel filter inside the tank on the pump for the fuel injection.  Lost power on my Raptor at the dunes once cause the filter would clog up but when I shut the machine off the dirt in the tank would fall off the filter.  It would then start to build up again as I ran the quad hard.

Polaris has an issue with the fuel pumps going bad on the Side by Side's. You can get a aftermarket pump from Quantum fuel systems. They have a search feature on the web site to search by vehicle. You can pull the fuel module out of the tank, pull the OEM pump and install the new pump. Intatll a test gauge in you system to test the pump I believe you will find the pressure is dropping off after you ride  for a while. When you shut it off and wait then refire it the pump has cooled to make it a bit further.

Hey Les, how you doing. You helped me do my pinion nut out in Wendover.

I installed the Quantum pump in my 1000 last week, I haven't been able to take it out and see if it acts up. The strange thing with this issue is that it has only happened in southern Utah. We have rode hundreds of miles in northern and central Utah, in between trips to southern Utah, with no issues.

I didn't check the pressures. I didn't notice a test port when I had it tore down.

Mike:
We have been busy down here in Arizona this winter. he have a small shop in Brenda and have doing minor repairs, oil changes.
We haven't taken the time to go out and stir any of the dirt around here. When not in the shop we have been helping fix a friends place up to his liking, he just bought it in October. We bought his old place and a few things to change here to make it ours.

As the year speeds along it will soon time to head back to Nevada for the summer.

Sounds like you guys are getting out there and stirring the dirt a bit.

If you get on the RZR.net forum, go to RZR 800 specific, there is a good write up on checking fuel pressure, it can be used to check the quads also.

A huge shout-out to Rut for offering, then executing on replacing the factory defective fuel pump in my new 2018 Sportsman XP1000. I think Rut and I confirmed that after ~1200 miles, these factory pumps crap the bed and likely overheat causing the stalling effect.

And, going above and beyond, Rut even rewired some of my dealers apparent shoddy work on my street legal lights and even fixed *MY* shoddy work on my Rotopax mount!  Grin

Kudos and a HUGE thank you to my friend Mike (Rut) for all this super work on my behalf!
