Seeking a SEMI for towing my RV!
01/30/19 at 07:53:25

So, the hunt has begun for a semi tractor to haul my 43' 5th wheel. I quite like the Freightliner Cascadia's with the automatic transmission.

Seems to convert a Semi to haul a consumer grade RV, I need to rewire the trailer plug + brake controller and possibly replace the 5th wheel hitch.

Anyone else gone down this path?

I would just leave it hitched to the 5th wheel and move the Audi. I found some in the $26k range.. and two in Idaho in the $15k range.

Nice looking rig! The wife gave me specific instructions that I will have to hold until Summer.. as a good chunk of our funds are going to our Europe trip this summer!  Smiley

If you don't have a CDL you'll want to look for one that's been converted so it is titled as an RV (motor coach).  Otherwise your truck will be limited to 26,000 GVW.

Not in the State of Utah. 26k generally requires a Class-A license, not a CDL. Utah doesn't seem to require either as I've seen ~40' TH tandem towing, which I think is just crazy!

Sorry but utahcruiser is correct in his comment.  Just for clarification on the CDL vs Class A.  Class A is a CDL license classification as are Class B and Class C.  Any vehicle with a GVW of 26000 lbs or more requires the driver to obtain a CDL License the exception being a vehicle of that weight classified as an RV such as a Motorhome.  You can go to the website Multimedia file viewing and clickable links are available for registered members only!!  You need to Login or Register!!
for a CDL handbook in PDF for any further clarification you may need.

And in this case, it would be classified as a non-commercial use RV and thus not require a CDL.

Or at least that's the plan. I see plenty of them out there with the "NOT FOR HIRE" sign on the side.  Wink

Some of the city tractors are geared too low for highway use. I talked to a couple people that have them and they said you need to change the springs also. DON~~~

Thanks, but you're killing me Rut. Purchase is still on hold for a bit. Don't think I'll be spending upward of $60k anyway and trying to keep to a used unit at/around $15-30k range. Found one in Moab for $26k.. super clean..

So close to buying a Volvo with Cummins ISX-475HP today. This was a full over the road w/full sleeper cab and 10 weels, 3x axle setup. Drove up toward Brigham City to test drive.

Passed for now, because the rig needs body work and is seeping some serious oil. Price was good, but if the guy would have come down $2900, I would have jumped at it.

Unreal how enormous these full sized over-the-road Semi's are when compared to my Ram Dually!

Also, confirmed with the state, no change in Drivers license or CDL required if hauling an RV. No inspection/emissions required either. A full size semi will cost me just under $400 to register after any tax. State Farm quoted around $100/month for full coverage insurance.
