Utah archeology & relics
02/24/20 at 07:36:27

I had a great opportunity on Sunday (yesterday) to get a private archaic caves tour. The tour was led by the former head of Antiquities and archeology for the State of Utah and was also attended by his BLM counterpart.

Its interesting to note that once they discovered that I was an avid OHV'er (and Jeeper), they wanted to educate me on what they consider the significant destruction being perpetuated against Indian art, caves and ruins by OHV'ers. The general feeling was that because we COULD reach those hard to access locations, we are likely responsible for the bullet holes, fires and vandalism. The sad truth is, he's (they) likely are correct. In every batch of exceptional OHV'ers, there's always some ass-clown that decides its somehow acceptable to pump some 9mm rounds into 2000 year old Indian art.

So, how to combat this and educate our friends and OHV associates?

Both have agreed to speak on this if I could coordinate a venue and time/date.

Thoughts? Who'd participate?

FWIW, I've never seen that out of ANY of the people I OHV with, hike with, or do anything else with.  The worst I've seen out of any of my family or friends was that one got out of the boat on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland.   Rolling on floor laughing

I strongly suspect this actually falls along the lines of trash, littering, and vandalism along the Paiute Trail... when actual studies were done, they found it was the locals doing it, not the tourists.

I've never been with anyone thats done vandalism, but I've seen it a few times and in one instance caught a Sheriff's deputy tearing down the 50" gate at the top of Max Reid on the Paiute. Pretty sure he lost he job after we took photos of him, his machines, his tags, etc.

Just once, I'd like to catch a cretin shooting up indian art or the cool stuff at Zaqistan..

Actually they did NOTHING to him. I was so pissed, but it was the good ol boys protecting each other. Piute County's sheriff said not his jurisdiction, Forest service said it was a county sheriffs issue and Sevier county... well their good buddy's with the guy so he got off with a free pass to do it again.

I now have the State and BLM heads of antiquities and archeology ready to present on what we can do to help protect these areas.

Who would attend? Clubs?

Perhaps the BCCF poker run might present an opportunity?

I want to do something in the next 2-3 weeks, but this too is a great idea. Curious to see if they'd be willing to drive down and present.

I am late to this discussion so I apologize.  I have just returned from a Cruise through the Panama Canal.
2 comments about this topic.
Sometime ago regulars might remember an out of state group that posted a picture of their scratching their names on a rock outcropping somewhere in the south.  When I called them on it and told them what idiots they were they removed the picture from this site.  Some might remember that I told them to take their money and activity to some other state.
So it happens and sometimes in "our" group.
Second: If you go to the cave just north of the Salt Lake "pumps" - I cannot remember the name of the cave, but I am sure most of you know what I am talking about - You will find an example of real cultural destruction done by professional archeologists (spelling?) from the U of U that destroyed the history of the cave and did nothing to restore it to any sort of originality.  It is not just amateurs that do the damage we are concerned with.
So it also happens in "their" group.
Both facts should be noted.
Where and when is the meeting?
George

I think you're referring to the Hogups just west of the SL pump station. As for time/location, I've not yet finalized with the archeologists yet.
