Looking at 5th Wheel Toy Haulers
12/30/20 at 19:02:59

Where are some good places to shop (ie not Camping World)?  What are some brands to consider?  I'm looking for one that has a separate garage at least 13' long.  Living space should be comfortable for up to 4, and I would like it to be well appointed with good quality components.  It seems to be hard finding one with a big enough garage that doesn't also have a very large living space, so I may be stuck with getting a fairly large 5'er.

Something that large will likely still put you at a 40-44' rig. Modern rigs have gotten lighter, but they seem to suffer more issues like weak welding on the axle mount points, etc.

I have a Heartland. It has served me very well thus far, but I see many complaints from owners of newer rigs about quality control issues. QC issues can be avoided by ensuring you do a full walk-through and may even a sleepover in the rig before you haul it off the lot.

Test water pump, AC, Furnance, all appliances, inspect the axle weld points, check the tires to ensure they didn't just mount up cheap chinese garbage, etc.

Cyclone and Roadwarrior are solid brands if you do your own QC.

Thanks Jim.  Both the Road Warrior and Cyclone models look like they have nice floorplans, and they sure are well furnished inside.  Wow. very luxurious.  I'll have to check them out in person.  I would like to find one with a similar floorplan and garage that is under 40' if I can.  I spent today looking at various toy haulers in different dealerships in St. George.  There seems to be a big range in quality, and price point.  The lower cost ones were poorer quality, of course.  One of them had a bathroom door that wouldn't even shut.  A brand new RV, still sitting on the dealer's lot, and an inside door wont shut.  Roll Eyes

Anyone have a recommendation on 5th wheel hitches?  It will be going in a short bed Ram 3500, so it needs to be a slider.

SRW, with a  6 1/2' bed.

Nice to know I'm not out in left field. I had already been looking at a PullRite Superglide, but just online searches.  I haven't seen one in person yet.

Thanks

The unit you're looking as is the same unit in my RAM 3500 DRW short-bed. Works awesome. Never a single issue with it. Not a super fan of the capture plate, but it is what it is. Ensure you get a few cans of Sliplate dry lube..

I spent yesterday hitch shopping, and ordered a PullRite Superglide. There is a huge difference in price, for the same thing, depending on where you shop. I checked pricing on Amazon, and the hitch itself cost $1300. An RV dealership wanted $2600. The pricing difference was the same for the frame mounting brackets and the capture plate, with the dealership wanting exactly double what retail price was. PullRite's website states a 4 hour installation time, but the dealership claimed an 8 hour installation time, which was exactly double again. I finally ended up ordering it from a small Mom and Pop style U-Haul trailer rental place that also sells and installs hitches all the time. RV dealership price for the hitch, mounting brackets, and capture plate, with installation was $4005. U-Haul shop's price for the same thing was $2100.

Awesome! Yeah, these hitches aren't cheap, nor simple to frame-mount, and they're certainly not light. I use an engine hoist to remove mine when necessary.

Good call on the Pullrite and shopping around. Have you finalized on a 5th wheel?

We have a few more to look at in Mesquite and Las Vegas over the weekend, then we'll make a decision.

If you get one, you can park it (camp) at my new property in Panguitch. I just put an offer down on a "compound" w/12 acres just off Casto Canyon road.. Wink The seller should respond by 5pm today.  Smiley

That really is in the perfect place for me.  It is on the Freemont, right next to the Paunsaugunt, and just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Markagunt or the Paiute.

How long do you think it will be before you have it set up with hook ups?

If all goes well, I'm going to build/buy a food truck with an emphasis on grilled steaks. Panguitch needs far more places to eat!  Wink

We had the chance to camp in the new Toy Hauler for a few days.  It was fantastic, super comfortable and relaxing.  It was great to get away from it all for a few days.  Here are a few pictures of the Momentum 350G we ended up getting.

Nice looking rig. How did your 3500 SRW tow it?

It towed the trailer surprisingly well.  There is essentially no suspension squatting.  It just looks like the truck rides level with the 2700 lb pin weight.  I thought I would need air bags, but after towing the trailer I have decided they are not needed.  And power is good.  I had the cruise control set at 75 mph, and it slowed down to 70 mph coming up black ridge.  It stays in high gear on level highway and over small climbs, like the summit between Cedar and Beaver on I-15, so not too bad.  There is no sway with the fifth wheel, like there can be with a bumper pull.  I'm happy with it.

Nice! So, I bought a thing today too. Newest addition to my tow/haul family. I bought this for when we finally relocate to Panguitch. I figure I could install a fridge + freezer + generator for when I need to hit Costco in Cedar City or St. George.

But, for now its loaded with an ATV, generator and camping gear..

In 2 weeks, it gets an epoxy floor treatment.

Backing up my 43' 5th wheel is so much easier than this 15' trailer..
