I'd take the Barracks and Hog Canyon over the sand dunes any day, but that's just me. If you have time, hit those locations.

How is that part of the Virgin River (along the Barracks Trail) during the month of April?  Does it receive a lot of the snow melt?  Is there a river gauge from USGS that I can look at for current data?

Thanks.

No time of the year have I gotten my underwear wet (on ATV), nor gone above the tires on Jeep or SxS..

That being said, when there's ice/snow, it does make the crossings a bit more interesting and throttling through is sometimes the ONLY option.

Old thread, but times have changed.  Any thoughts on the trail this time of year with all the snowmelt?  At one time, someone had told me that 50 cfs was passable, but recent data is showing over 300 cfs and some are reporting that banks are washed out.  Looking to be down there in two weeks.

Its running pretty good, but its passable. The last crossing toward the huge sand mountain is 100% obliterated due to heavy Jeep activity, so use caution. Should be a good run this time of year..

I just drove through Mt Carmel Junction and through Zion's National Park today.  The Virgin River west of Zion's has a LOT of water in it.  I didn't take the Barrack's trail today, so cannot say how much water is in the Virgin River in that area.

This photo is from the Barracks trail last year in late May.  I chose a bad line and one of the crossings was over the top of my 32" tires.
