I'm certainly not an expert but sure have had my time playing with them as a kid.  Heck just the other day I found a couple in our swamp.  Generally they like water just to breed I've been told.  They say most of the time they spend their time in range land or farm fields.   We'll I'm saying the only time I have ever run into them, literally 100's of times in my life, has been near water. I must have been lucky to catch them when their were feeling intimate
