Route recommendations for Paiute Trail
03/21/23 at 11:31:46

Hello all,

I've been a lurker for awhile trying to gather data on riding areas and routes but I thought I'd just post a question to get any expert feedback.

I live in St. George, UT. area and am familiar with a lot of the trails down here, but not so much around Paiute Trail area.

We're planning on a 50" ATV trail ride this summer. No big rigs.
When: last week of June
Duration:5-6 days
Camping: ATV camping on the trail (dispersed) 3-4 days (carry tents and gear on ATV), and drop into local towns for gas and goodies and maybe a campground (Marysvale, Circleville, Beaver, Salina, Koosharem, etc....)

Do you have any recommendations?
I'd love some GPS tracks or input.
I've watched several of the ATV Overland Youtube videos that have some GPS camping spots listed, but open to locals expert advice on where to camp on the trail (lakes, ponds, meadows, etc).

We could just stay on the 01 and divide it up into the main areas South, West, North, East, but don't want to miss some great 50" only sections.

If we were to do camping on the trail, is there a great (safe) staging area to leave trucks and trailers for the duration? (at our own risk). Coming from the south (St. George).

** With all the snow this year, do you think the higher sections (Tushers) will be closed / snowy in late June? Recommended alternatives?

I'm grabbing all the maps I can, but any links to other resources would be great.

Thanks in advance. I'll keep reading through the forum to see what else I can find.
BTW - thanks to all those who contribute and maintain this great resource.

-Steven B.

Snowpack:  I'm skeptical that the higher elevations will be open at the time you mention.  It's possible, just not probable.

Camping:  Half of the fun is finding spots along the way.  It's generally not difficult at all to find a place to pitch the tents.  Personally, I wouldn't camp near the lakes or established campgrounds, but that's because I like camping AWAY from crowds.  Whenever I've thought "I should start looking for a place to camp" along the main trails, I don't think I've ever had to drive for more than 20 minutes or so to find one.

Trails:  I'd take every 50" trail I could come across.  The 01 is beautiful and fun, but actual trails are always better than forest roads.  The Nat Geo map of the Paiute is the best single reference/map there is.  It should be your first map, and everything else should be in addition to it.

Truck/trailer parking:  KOA in Fillmore, or Rocky Ridge Resort in Marysvale.  Others will probably chime in with other places on the south end of the Paiute.  Beaver has a KOA, I haven't been there, but it's probably a decent place to park.  Often they have an "overflow lot" where you can park a truck/trailer cheap if you're not occupying.

Now... one possible solution to both the snow and the truck parking...you can probably drive right out your front door, make it to the Cedar City/Paunsaugunt/Kanab/Panguitch area trails, drive up the Fremont, onto the Paiute, and go as far north as you can make it before you hit snow that's too deep to make it through.  That would give you a lot longer distance to travel, as opposed to just doing small day-trips from a base camp until you hit snow, having to turn back.

Start in Panguitch, run Casto Canyon, then exit on the Fremont02 north. Drop down into Circleville, bank West onto the Paiute01 (near the Circleville cemetary), back up the mountain, run the smaller trails north until the 01/Max Reid. Head toward the Fremont Indian Museum, continue East along Clear Creek Road, run the Sam Stowe / 01 trail North (50")..

That's how I'd start anyway..likely you can reserve a tent spot at the Castlerock campground just off I-70 at the Fremont Indian Museum exit.

Trail 89, the Anderson Dairy Trail, is a must do 50" trail.
The Max Reid Trail, on the 01, just south of I-70 is a great trail as well.  Those two are probably my favorites.

I don't think you'll get over the Tushars in late June this year due to snowpack.

Thank you gentleman.

@DerMouse
I love your idea about heading out from home. I'm actually now trying to map out a more southern route as a different trip (earlier in Spring before it gets too hot).

If I follow your recommendation, this is what I'm thinking.
Heading out from Ivins, make my way across the AZ Strip, up and over to Coral Pink, crossing up through the Kanab trails and onto the Paunsagunt Plateau OHV Trail, then tie into the Fremont OHV Trail, then go across the Markagunt OHT Trail and then circle back down around from Enterprise to St. George.... Now I just need to find the exact route. (avoiding highways) Has anyone done a loop like this? Maps / resources / experience? (I'll keep checking the Forum, I'm sure someone has done it)

-- Side note.... is there an ATV trail (not road) that gets you from Alton area up onto the rim of the Paunsagunt Plateau Trails??

@BruteForce
Thanks for the recommendation. I like the idea of starting off from Panguitch and hitting Casto Canyon. That incorporates more of the southern end.

@3TV
Thanks. That is exactly what I need.....
Are there any other 50" trails that are 'must do' that shouldn't be missed while on the Paiute Trail?

I know 5 days probably can't scratch the surface of the trail system, and I will plan on another trip in the Fall, but just trying to get the best intel from those experienced with the area.

Thanks again!
Please chime in with more thoughts.

I did a loop from Hurricane down to the strip to Coral Pink. North to Parowan then back to Hurricane. I have a track on my laptop at work.   I'll look it up tomorrow.  It's a 2 day loop.  But instead of circling back down from Parowan,  you could head north to the Paiute.

I've done the following loop.  It's over 500 miles and took me two days.

@Flipper
Wow, thanks for the route map. It's very much appreciated.

Did you have any issues with any sections?

- Any long sections on pavement/blacktop?
- I don't foresee doing a river crossing of the Virgin River on the south end (based on runoff) anytime soon, but I can get around.  Smiley

If anyone else has some similar route maps on this 'loop', I'd love to see them.

*** Back on the Paiute Trail ***
Does anyone have any trail sections that the DON'T recommend? (I think 'almost' every trail should be explored at least once, but with limited time, are there some you would avoid/bypass?)

- Too rocky / rough
- Too sketchy / dangerous
- Too busy
- Long, boring, not worth the time
- Other...

Thanks!

Normally I would say avoid the 01/02 intersection above Marysvale, but I don't believe the gates will be open to the top in June due to our significant snow pack this year. I'd also avoid the PST74 to Hoovers as it gets quite congested with big rigs.

That being stated, must ride 50" trails are:

Casto Canyon
PST06 to PST68 from Dog Valley area (southern most end of the Paiute)
Max Reid from I-70
PST33/53 on the Monroe Mountain side (to/from Otter Creek and/or Koosharem)
PST03 / Chalk Creek out of FIllmore
Paiute01 / Sam Stowe off Clear Creek rd near the Fremont Indian Museum
PST66 if you're brave enough to battle that narrow, rock strewn beast of a trail! Smiley

DM me an email address and I can send off some tracks for that area.

Edited to add: Be sure to pick up the NATGeo maps for the areas you want to ride. You can find them on Amazon or Sportsmans Warehouse (usually).

Coming from the south and north of SR20, you come to trail that has a sign saying PST06. Its a 50" trail that follows a creek straight north and intersects at the PST68 (heading to Beaver or Junction). Pretty sure (I think) that sign said PST06..

My favorite is PST 66.  But don't take new machine up it.  You will have battle scars when you're through.
