Ive gone over to the dark side
05/21/23 at 16:34:58

**** EDITED ****

Well, it's official I've gone over to the dark side and ordered a 2023 CanAm Maverick Trail DSP 1000. They said I could pick from one of three colors, Black, Black, or BLACK. I went with BLACK

Forgot to mention I did add Glass flipout windshield and back window, a 4500 lb winch w/synthetic rope; The Can Am hard top; Can Am rear view mirror and side view mirrors; the large Can-Am All-Terrain Trunk Cover in matching Black: Can-Am LinQ Pivoting Rack also in matching Black, a Ram mount for my Samsung Tab Active3 (an awesome big screen gps). And all the crap to make it street legal.

Now to figure out what other accessories it needs.

A roof rack is right up there on the list of things, these rides really don't have as much storage room as might be thunk.

Camping gear for a bunch of people (on the Trail's fatter brother):

You said you had it on order... if you really, really want to still do 50" trails, keep the trail.  If 50" trails aren't a hard requirement, change your order to the sport.  The sport is only 10" wider, but a MUCH smoother ride.

Good choice, ours is black too.  An awesome machine for a 50" UTV!  Not much suspension for faster terrain, but it really shines on tight technical trails.  The tighter and more technical the better.  It can crawl along at 4 mph in high range, and low range is rediculously low geared.  We are taking ours to do Behind The Reef Trail next weekend.

Accessories I did on ours include:  3500 lb winch; The Can Am hard top; Can Am rear view mirror; Seizmik side view mirrors; Lowrance GPS; the large Can Am rear trunk; Rotopax 2 gallon fuel cell mounted to storage trunk; 1/2" thick UHMW skid plate from Super ATV; 14" beadlock wheels from a Maverick X3 XRS, which have the same backspacking and offset as the stock Maverick Trail wheels, so 50" width is maintained; and a set of 28x9R-14 Maxxis Big Horn tires.

29x9R-14 Maxxis Big Horn tires will fit.  If I were buying tires today I would buy that size.  You need all the ground clearance you can get with this machine, ... and a strong skid plate.

One other thing you might be interested in is some of the noise reducing things Can Am has avaiable.  Can Am designed a noise reduction bulkhead (firewall) for the new Commander that installs over the stock firewall, on the cockpit side, in front of the engine.  It significantly reduces noise in the cockpit, and since the Commander and the Trail have the same cab (except for the doors), it will fit a Maverick Trail.

That sounds like a must have. Do you know the part number or where to find it?

I wish I had gone Can Am instead of a Polaris RZR.  I wasn't keen on my Can Am ATV purchase 10 years ago, but wow I'm really not a fan of Polaris. You'll like your new ride, I felt the same way though when I purchase my first SxS.  I'm glad I did but I still like my Grizzly.

For our first SxS, I went with the CanAm X3 Turbo R. No regrets yet and so many mods available for it (similar to our Jeeps)!

Rolling on floor laughing Rolling on floor laughing I didn't say I went to the dark side because I bought a side by side, or a cam-am, I love my two-up can-am.
It's because when I look at it, I feel like I'll be riding in Darth Vader's helmet.
Now I think about it maybe I should buy one to wear when I'm running around in it. LOL!  Rolling on floor laughing Rolling on floor laughing

The reality we live in is the ATV's are a rare site anymore. We did 2 jamborees since 9/22 and we were the only ATV's on the ride. What's kind of funny is many of the SxS drivers felt compelled to share all their ATV stories!!  Rolling on floor laughing
It is getting clear that most group riding events end up doing trails / climbs better suited for SxS than ATV's. Seems like the SxS crowd is always hunting the next steep, angry climb or deep rutted trail to conquer.
We also had to smile a bit when we stopped for a break it was shocking to see how many "accessories" came out of those SxS! It's like a contest of "what do you have"  Rolling on floor laughing

I find this to our benefit. Yesterday and today, we're only going out on ATV's and we'll be running trails not suitable for larger vehicles. We'll have all the trails to ourselves! Wink

Jim enjoy the 50" trails. I am glad I logged years of riding when the 50" trails were not mutilated by the SxS. Hopefully the narrow trails will survive in to the future.

Today, we're running the Fremont02 north and taking the 50" through Horse Valley. We'll see what the snow and trail conditions look like and we hope to make it into Marysvale.

We just got back from 7 days in the San Rafael Swell.  We have a 72" SxS and a 50" SxS.  The 72" machine would have done better almost everywhere, but it wouldn't have fit on Behind the Reef trail, which I wanted to do, so we took our Maverick Trail instead.

We did these trails:
Black Dragon
Devils Racetrack
Eagle Canyon
Reds Canyon
Behind the Reef.

Trail that was most fun to drive:  Behind the Reef
Trail with best scenery:  Behind the Reef

I have a new favorite trail.  It used to be the Hickman Canyon switchbacks coming out of Otter Creek, but now it is Behind the Reef.  It had just the right amount of difficulty to make it fun, but nothing that required a second attempt. And it has unbelievable scenery the whole way.  There is a narrow slick rock ledge that makes your heart sink when you first see it, because you think you are going to have to turn back, but after you get out and walk it you realize it isn't technically challenging, it just makes you get a really good grip on the seat foam when you drive through it.

Thinking back, my top five favorite trails are all 50" trails.  The bigger UTVs work better everywhere else, but I am not willing to give up 50" trails.  A Maverick Trail does a 50" trail easily, and it can still do the big boy trails.

I think you chose well ordering a Maverick Trail.  It is much better quality than the 50" Polaris.  We have owned ours for 3 years and now have 1500 miles on it without one single problem; zero, zip, zilch, nada, nothing at all.

When we did Devils Racetrack with the 50" trail it was a challenge.  The last two times I have done this trail were in Maverick X3 XRS machines (72" wide, 24" suspension travel).  The Maverick Trail can't compete with that, so the trail is more challenging.  Line choice is critical because just 6" off the best line means you may not make it.  We actually had to try twice on the biggest steps on the trail.

But the challenge is what makes it fun.  At the completion of the trail I felt like I had had more fun than on previous rides on this trail.  It was certainly more exiting in places.

The noise suppression bulkhead I was talking about is available from Can Am.  It is an OEM part for a Can Am Commander.
