Rubicon Trail?
08/23/23 at 08:19:18

I'll be doing the Rubicon Trail next week.  I plan on running the trail over two days and spending one night on the trail.  It has been 20 years since I did the trail, so, has anyone done the trail recently that can comment on trail conditions?

I have heard that carrying a gun in Californistan can be problematic, and that they have Rangers that patrol the trail regularly, specifically looking for that.  Anyone know the specifics about it?

I also hear that overnight camping is only permitted in specific areas.  I suppose it will be self evident when I get there?

Any other specific issues I should know about?

I rode it on ATV about 4 years ago. I suppose that if you are CCW in CA, you're likely solid with the handgun. We stayed in Lake Tahoe and I had a .45 open carry with me and never got bothered.

Bring spare parts.. its a beast of a trail/area.

I plan on staying in Pollock Pines Monday night, which is the closest town to the trailhead that has gasoline.  My 392 Jeep drinks gas a little more than average.  I'll hit the trail Tuesday morning with two other Jeeps from California.  Since I don't have a concealed carry permit for California I'll probably leave my Glock 9mm at home, and just use a big stick to defend myself from bears  Roll Eyes

Bears are very real in that area. We had a big bear walk right into our open garage (Tahoe) and ransack our coolers before hitting every garbage can on the street!
